The Edmonton Humane Society has been an animal welfare leader in the Edmonton community since 1907. We are a safe haven for thousands of animals in our care each year. EHS plays a key role in the Edmonton region by enriching the lives of people and their companion animals not only through our sheltering, but through our programs, services and community engagement.

 

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Communication & Education, the Supervisor, Humane Education is a member of the Humane Education team working alongside the Humane Educator. The Supervisor leads the administration and staffing required to deliver Humane Education programming. This includes overseeing the hiring and supervision of program staff who facilitate programs such as camps, birthdays, etc. Additionally, they will be responsible for the department’s customer service including responding to inquiries via phone, email, etc., coordinating the booking of programs, and any related administrative duties such as invoicing, payment processing and ordering supplies.

 

EHS connects people and companion animals through advocacy, education and community engagement and the work of Humane Education directly supports this mission.

 

Key Roles & Responsibilities

 

Supervise Program Staff

  • Hiring program staff to meet program delivery needs.
  • Creating and maintaining staff training program.
  • Day-to-day human resources oversight for program staff including scheduling, performance management, onboarding, training, progressive discipline, time and attendance, staff professional development & coaching.
  • Serve as on-call support for program staff as needed for evening/weekend programs.

 

Oversee Administration and Customer Service

  • Coordinate booking of programs, including for external customers and ensuring required space(s) are reserved appropriately for scheduled programs.
  • Responding promptly and professionally to phone and email inquiries, re-directing where necessary.
  • Order office and program supplies as needed.
  • Track results of programs including attendance, revenues, expenses, etc.
  • Create and update records and databases with customers, leads, financial and other data.
  • Create and maintain necessary policies, processes and procedures for department.

Program Delivery

  • Lead the delivery of Humane Education programs with the purpose of revenue generation (e.g. camps, birthdays), working with the Humane Educator to develop content for programs as required.
  • Support the Humane Educator in the delivery of education-focuses programs as necessary, such as attending on or off-site presentations as necessary, hosting tours, supervising large groups, etc.
  • Represent the Edmonton Humane Society as an ambassador at community awareness and other events as appropriate, to increase understanding for the work EHS does and promote Humane Education programs.
  • Other duties as required.

 

Education & Requirements

 

  • A diploma or degree in a related field (recreation, business administration, marketing/sales, animal welfare, humane education) which adds value and context to the work being performed and overall understanding of the work we do.
  • Minimum two (2) years in administration or customer service, including preferably 1 year supervisory/leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Ability to travel with a valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid and CPR and AED Certification is required. Pet First Aid an asset.
  • Experience using a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system would be an asset.
  • Experienced and comfortable handling companion animals including cats, dogs, and small animals.
  • Security and background clearance check including vulnerable sector.
  • Experience working in a computerized office environment as well as in the field in a variety of environmental conditions is an asset.

Skills & Abilities

As the ideal candidate, you will have a passion for people, performance and diversity within lens of animal welfare. You have excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills. You are highly organized with strong time management skills and ability to handle multiple priorities. You have strong written and oral communication skills .

 

In addition, you will possess problem solving attitude with an eye for detail; familiarity with office management procedures and basic accounting principles; Leadership skills to motivate and create a culture of collaboration among team which upholds high standards of performance and accountability.

 

You are comfortable interacting with large audiences of all ages as part of program and event support and have an ability to work independently and as part of a team.

 

Compensation/Hours

Compensation: EHS offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.

Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
