THE OPPORTUNITY 

Job Summary

A key member of the finance team, the Senior Accountant at Phoenix Society works closely with the management team and is responsible for enhancing the organization’s accounting functions; maintaining and improving accounting policies, principles and practices; monitoring and analyzing data; and producing financial reports. This position has the potential for the right individual to grow into an Accounting Manager role.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Finance

  • Supervise and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department including: month end and year end processes; accounts payable/receivable; cash receipts; general ledger; payroll and utilities; and revenue and expenditure variance analysis
  • Support program and operational managers in the execution of their financial responsibilities, including reviewing monthly financial statements, budgeting and forecasting
  • Prepare financial reports for granting agencies to ensure contractual compliance
  • Monitor and analyze accounting data and produce monthly financial reports and statements, including variance analysis and research
  • Support the year-end audit planning and liaise with the auditors
  • Verify accuracy of all financial functions and notify the CFO of any discrepancies
  • Facilitate compliance with regulatory agencies requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements and advising management on needed actions
  • Identify, recommend, and implement process improvements to drive efficiencies and ensure effective internal controls

Human Resources

  • Provide positive servant leadership to all Finance staff, encouraging a team approach, professional attitude and respectful, supportive working relationships
  • Participate with the CFO in training and orientation for new Finance staff
  • Give input to performance reviews and planning sessions for new Finance staff and provide on-going feedback and mentorship where required

THE CANDIDATE

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, commerce, etc., or equivalent
  • 2 to 5 years of experience providing accounting and financial services. Experience in a non-profit setting is an asset
  • Chartered Professional Accountants of British Columbia (CPABC) designation (or successful writing of the CFE)
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening is required
  • Satisfactory completion of Tuberculosis Screening form is required
  • Satisfactory completion of Employee Immunization Record form is required
