About us:

Founded in 1960, the Youth Services Bureau of Ottawa (YSB) is one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit agencies in Ottawa and a registered charity. It provides mental health services, employment programs, emergency shelter, community, health and housing services, and justice programs to youth in the Ottawa area, serving between 2,500 and 3,000 at‑risk individuals aged 12+ and their families every month. YSB employs 350 caring professionals in a unionized environment in over 26 locations across Ottawa.

Under the general direction of Director of the Community Services and the immediate supervision of the Shelter coordinator, the Control Officer is responsible to provide control and security services on the overnight in YSB shelters in accordance with policies and directives established within the YSB.

 

What you will do:

  • Provide unit coverage on a rotational shift basis ensuring the safety and security of staff, clients and physical plant.        
  • Monitor movement/admission of all staff, residents and visitors.        
  • Respond to emergency alarms and notify/access appropriate resources        
  • Monitor security systems, camera’s and review footage when necessary        
  • Support general cleanliness and maintenance of the facility        
  • Follow procedures and instructions in a precise manner and respond appropriately and calmly in emergency or crisis situations       
  • Receive and screen visitors and callers in a professional manner while meeting the security needs of the Shelter       
  • Liaison and communicate with and, when required, shadow Youth workers in order to maintain safety of the building       
  • Attend and participate in supervision        
  • Participate in on-going training as required        
  • Follow safe work practices and procedure as established by YSB and the board       

This opportunity may be right for you if you have:

 

  • College diploma in Law & Security or related field or equivalent       
  • One year related experience       
  • Experience using security cameras and monitoring video surveillance        
  • Knowledge of client population and community services       
  • Ability to support crisis events in appropriate manner       
  • Ability to work autonomously and as an effective team member       
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills       
  • Fluency in English is essential; French will be considered an asset  
  • Female
