UrbanArts is a progressive, not-for-profit charitable Local Arts Service Organization (LASO) providing opportunities for diverse cultural expression, artistic development, training and employment to members of urban communities with a focus on youth in central west Toronto; UrbanArts focuses on engaging community through the arts; UrbanArts is an incubator for local arts, with a range of programs led by professional artists in visual, literary, digital, culinary and media arts, theatre, dance and music. Mandate: To promote, engage and facilitate cultural and community development opportunities between artists, arts organizations and community members and community organizations.

 

Job Title: Engagement & Marketing Assistant

Reporting: Operations Manager

 

Position Description: UrbanArts is seeking a passionate individual, working under the direction of the Operations Manager and collaborating with the Program & Operations teams, support full scale marketing and community engagement activities. The Engagement & Marketing Assistant will contribute to the overall scope of UrbanArts with responsibilities that include working with the inter-agency staff teams in developing and implementing public programs and engagement activities for diverse demographics primarily from underserved neighbourhoods and from a variety of perspectives.

The incumbent will contribute to both long and short-range planning, collaborating closely with members of the Program & Operations teams as well as contracted artists and facilitators to create strong interdisciplinary engagement activities to ensure UrbanArts’ programs and services are widely promoted and accessible to the community, schools, arts and cross-sectoral organizations and groups. These are done through on-the-ground collaboration, information sessions, workshops and innovative arts programming that operate outside the box of traditional education programs.

The Engagement & Marketing Assistant also supports the marketing and promotions of all UrbanArts programs, events and activities. This aspect of the work involves working with the Development & Communications Coordinator on the design and development of all promotional materials, content creation, social media marketing and updating of the UrbanArts website.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Outreach & Engagement:

  • Connects with community members to provide post-pandemic re-engagement support and return to UrbanArts activities
  • Conducts general engagement and outreach activities by developing strategies which may include information sessions, meetings, connecting and attending community events meetings and other engagement activities at other organizations and cultural spaces
  • Plans, hosts, and facilitates outreach and engagement activities to enhance community and visitor enjoyment & engagement with exhibitions, considering new formats & experimentation (i.e., talks, panels, tours, workshops, screenings, worksheets & guides, videos, audio tours, information sessions or other innovative ways to engage).

  • Maintains community relations and encourages public to access to UrbanArts spaces (computer lab and music studio, dance studio, demonstration kitchen, outdoor garden space) for visitors and clients ensuring appropriate signage

     

Communications/Marketing

  • Works closely with Program and Communications teams to develop marketing materials for programming, projects and special events using the UrbanArts brand guide

  • Supports Communications through regular newsletter creation, electronic and social media engagement

  • Plans and executes social media marketing and engagement (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.,) internally and in collaboration with external groups when necessary

  • Supports Communications with regularly updating website with new content

Administration

  • Tracks in-person, website and social media metrics and provides analysis and reports as needed
  • Provides administrative and clerical support across multiple communications platforms – telephone, email, one-on-one conversation, etc.,
  • Other organizational responsibilities as needed & assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A strong combination of education and experience in marketing & communications, the arts and/or human/social services

  • A minimum of 2 years experience in targeted community outreach and engagement, content creation and marketing, preferably in an arts/non-profit setting

  • Strong desire for working with a multi-ethnic, multi-generational clientele

  • Strong knowledge of the former city of York and its high-needs/emerging areas (York South-Weston, Little Jamaica, Oakwood Village, Weston-Pelham Park, etc.)

  • Experience with local cultural neighbourhoods such as Little Jamaica is an asset

  • Passion and knowledge and/or experience within the arts and in local communities

  • Energetic, positive, creative thinker with solid communication skills

  • Confident being a leader and talking with both youth and community at large to ensure support their access to and participation in UrbanArts programs and events

  • Strong computer skills:

    • Experience using digital design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva)

    • Experience using social media publishing tools (Hootsuite, Vimeo, YouTube, etc.,)

    • Knowledge/experience with creating reports using social media / Google Analytics

    • Proficiency with Mac and/or Windows operating systems with a great working knowledge of Microsoft and Google based platforms, social media platforms, and proficiency with/high aptitude to learn other programs and applications (e.g., databases, graphics, web utilities)

  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills

  • Strong report writing and other documentation skills

     

Working Conditions

The Engagement & Marketing Assistant normally works in an office setting at the Bartonville and the Weston Common locations, although there are times the incumbent will be off-site at facilities operated by other organizations and in the community as necessary to the role.

Evening and weekend work is required to facilitate program activities. We offer a combination of onsite and remote work.
