The Richmond Food Bank is a dynamic hub for people in need of grocery assistance. The Richmond Food Bank prides itself on its role within the community, providing a service as well as support for those in need as well as an organization that opens its doors to a significant and critical team of volunteers. We are seeking an individual to lead, support and coordinate our volunteers to ensure they continue as an engaged and effective team.


Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Volunteer Coordinator recruits, supervises and directs the activities of the volunteers of the Richmond food Bank (RFB). The Volunteer Coordinator plays a key role in communicating the vision of the organization and the part volunteers play, knowing RFB volunteers, what motivates them and how to get the best from them, developing RFB volunteers, helping them move into new roles as their needs and the needs of the organization changes and ensures the large number of tasks are completed in order to successfully deliver RFB programs.




Volunteer Operational Management
- Determines tasks to be completed, considers inventory needs for upcoming distributions
- Schedules volunteers and delegates tasks as required, assists with tasks as required
- Creates and distributes volunteer communications such as newsletters and social media
- Provides a welcoming and supportive environment to volunteers
- Resolves conflict and misunderstanding between volunteers
- Maintains volunteer records, provides required documentation


Volunteer Recruitment
- Plans how and where to recruit and post for volunteers
- Conducts interviews
- Completes relevant reference and background checks
- Liaises with community groups to understand and deploy volunteer resources


Volunteer Orientation and Training
- Develops orientation process and materials, assesses and updates as required

- Provides or ensures all volunteers are oriented to the organization, understanding processes, staff responsibilities, building orientation
- Provides or ensures training in processes, use of equipment for specific positions.


Workplace Safety and Risk
- Ensures appropriate documentation is completed for volunteers including code of conduct and confidentiality
- Ensures all volunteers are aware of security procedures and protocols including fire drill, first aid, earthquake


Volunteer Recognition
- Provides individual and group recognition when warranted
- Sends birthday cards to volunteers
- Coordinates volunteer recognition and social events


Food Bank Operations
- Ensures client and volunteer requests and issues are handled
- Provides assistance to Food Bank operations such as warehouse, programs and client activities and events
- Provides tours to volunteers, community groups and donors as required
- Attends events on behalf of RFB


Additional duties as required




Education and Experience
- 2 – 3 years of experience in working with volunteers and/or not for profit administration (or an appropriate combination of education and experience).



Concrete demonstrable skills include:
- Excellent organizational and planning skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral and to a wide range of audiences
- Strong data collection and management skills
- Proven ability to interview, assess, train and develop others
- Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to people management
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people (staff, volunteers, donors, neighbours, community groups)
- Passion and support for community service and a desire to contribute to a positive, caring and supportive environment



Starting wage per hour is from $20 per hour normally for thirty-five hours per week from 9:00am-4:00pm Monday through Friday. Some evening and weekend work is required for special events and evening distributions. Group insurance benefits when eligible.
