NOVA provides young people between the ages of 16-24, who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless with a safe, affordable and supportive living environment. Operating primarily from a Harm Reduction philosophy, the program provides 20 beds as a low-barrier housing solution to those who are faced with multiple challenges.

The Life Skills Coach creates and facilitates cultural, educational and recreational opportunities for the youth residing at NOVA.  In addition, the Life Skills Coach administers the Y-SPDAT assessment to all youth residing in the STAY program.

Responsibilities:

  • Build collaborative relationships with youth and transparently address current challenges
  • Support youth to achieve their individual goal plans through a client centred, strength based approach
  • Role model life skills, social skills, communication skills and conflict resolution
  • Encourage youth to engage in healthy lifestyle alternatives
  • Identify, design and implement relevant educational life and social skills groups
  • Plan and facilitate a monthly recreational and cultural activity calendar
  • Maintain accurate and timely data collection, data entry and completion of program assessments
  • Maintain a monthly budget and documentation of spending
  • Complete accurate written daily documentation (log entries, contact notes, incident reports)
  • Complete referral and intake documentation
  • Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, program partners and other professionals
  • Ensure a safe, secure environment including maintenance and cleanliness of unit and property
  • Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation
  • Participate in unit staff meetings

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Diploma in a related human services field
  • 1 -2 years of experience working with youth
  • Knowledge of harm reduction, addictions and strength based philosophy
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Able to work within a team and effectively deal with crisis situations
  • Able to work shift work
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Criminal Record Check and Child Intervention Check
  • General computer knowledge (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • A reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license are an asset

Conditions of Employment:

  • The hours of work are Monday through Friday working 7AM-3PM one week and 3PM-11PM the next week.
  • This is a position that requires frequent standing, walking up and down stairs, and occasional lifting.
  • All candidates will be obliged to comply with EJHS’s Mandatory Vaccine Mandate, as a condition of employment.

Salary:

The annual salary for this position is $45,000 with a competitive benefits package available upon successful completion of the probationary period.
