A Hospice Residence PSW provides care to vulnerable individuals at end of life with compassion, demonstrating an ability to respond to the needs of clients with varied clinical conditions and diagnoses. Working within an interdisciplinary team, this position helps families navigate the death of a loved one with empathy and an understanding that caring for the family is central to excellent palliation.   The incumbent will assist with all aspects of the operations of the residence including personal care, preparation, delivery, and feeding of meals and housekeeping of patient rooms and common areas.



  • Contribute to a holistic supportive environment to meet the diverse needs of clients and families
  • Assist with personal care
  • Assist with preparation and delivery of meals to clients
  • Provide positioning and feeding for clients
  • Assist with cleaning of client rooms including sweeping, removing garbage, and wiping down high touch surfaces
  • This position involves working 10 hour day and night shifts as well as weekends.

  • Maintain an awareness of best practices and standards for all HWR activities.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with partners and the wider community
  • Demonstrate and encourage a team based professional working environment that empowers staff to be collectively responsible for meeting the HWR mission and vision.
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time



  • Completion of a PSW program with proof of certification
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care or Advanced Practice Palliative Skills
  • Minimum 2 years working as a PSW
  • Recent palliative care experience an asset



  • Knowledge of hospice palliative care and delivery with a commitment to lifelong learning
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks working autonomously and with a team of registered staff and volunteers
  • Excellent compassionate communication skills including being able to share a care plan with clients and families, providing care updates to registered staff and managing concerns raised by families.
  • Proficiency in the use of the computer hardware & software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records and documentation
  • Open, flexible and non-judgmental
  • Ability to lift more than 15 kg
