Registered Nurse - Parental Leave Coverage (0.6 FTE) - One Year Contract
We are seeking a Registered Nurse who is passionate about promoting health and wellness equity in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) to join the Primary Care team at Kilala Lelum Health Centre for one year to cover a parental leave (August-July). Kilala Lelum aims to provide access to primary care, food security, medication management, and Elder-led cultural care to new and existing members of the Health Centre through an outreach-based, culturally-safe, trauma-informed, member-centered, and harm reduction approach.
The Registered Nurse (0.6 FTE), supported by an integrated health services team, will provide excellent culturally-safe care to members accessing the Primary Care clinic. Working in conjunction with primary care providers (Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners), Allied Health providers (Elders, Counsellors, Social Navigators, Dieticians), and the Cultural Wellness team, the RN supports members’ access to and experience of primary care and Elder-led cultural care in the DTES.
- Establish relationships with members and provide culturally safe, kind, and empathetic support; support wellbeing and increase access to holistic health supports.
- Provide primary health care services, including clinical nursing, health promotion and prevention for members of all ages within an interdisciplinary team of Elders, Cultural Wellness Workers, Nurses, Outreach Workers, Social Navigators, Physicians, Dieticians, and Counsellors.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team, educational resources, and other health care providers/community partners to provide member-centered care and education.
- Follow leadership of Primary Care Co-Leads regarding program changes, day-to-day functioning of program, and plans to meet future goals.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Baccalaureate degree or Diploma in Nursing.
- Current practicing registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Professional, Practice, and Scope of Practice Standards and competencies as outlined by BCCNM; commit to annual continuing education to meet competencies.
- Minimum of one year of experience in primary care nursing or similar experience in a location that serves Indigenous community members and/or communities with multiple barriers to health and wellness equity, preferably within the DTES.
- Experience with OAT (Opioid agonist therapy) very beneficial.
- Certification in STI and Contraception management preferable but not required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of community resources available for member/family support and related health services.
- Comprehensive knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in member care.
- Ability to deal effectively with conflict, manage aggressive behaviour, and use non-violent crisis intervention and behavioural management techniques.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Flexible, team-oriented, and committed to respectful, collaborative problem-solving with team members.
- Demonstrated ability to provide community health and clinical nursing strategies to a variety of client groups in multiple settings.
- Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to clinic nursing.
- Demonstrated ability to critically read and utilize current health research in evidence based practice.
- Demonstrated commitment to culturally-safe, trauma-informed, member-centered, strength based, harm reduction and recovery-oriented practices.
- Experience and knowledge of Indigenous peoples and Indigenous culture would be preferred. Completion of a cultural competency course or willingness to participate required.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
- Work will take place in the primary care clinic at 626 Powell Street with occasional outreach in the DTES.
This position is supervised by the Primary Care Program Co-Leads, a team of nursing professionals, and will receive support from the Admin Co-Leads and Executive Director.
- One year contract to cover parental leave from August 1, 2022 until July 31, 2023 ( (with training in July 2022 where possible).
- Hourly salary will be based on the BCNU wage grid.
- Days of work will be determined with the successful candidate to meet requirements of 0.6 FTE (24 hours per week); potential days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday based on current clinic needs.
