The Program
Spirit of Our Youth supports First Nations, Metis or Inuit youth in home-based accommodations and Indigenous cultural programming.
For Indigenous youth, reconnecting to their indigenous culture to help heal past traumas while promoting a vision of a stronger, healthier future. Traditional teachings can empower youth to make strong connections with family and community. A cultural coordinator provides individual support and cultural opportunities including monthly sweats, weekly sharing circles, smudging, pipe ceremonies, feasts, dances, traditional healing ceremonies, languages and access to community Elders and Cultural Helpers.
This complex youth program (supporting at-risk youth) will house 1 to 3 youth aged 12-18.

The Position
Double-staffed trauma-Informed Youth Workers (Level 2) connect with each youth where they are at. Together they create individualized programs, which include basic life skills, creating healthy relationships and focus on personal empowerment through a connection with their indigenous culture.
Sunday to Thursday 8am - 4pm

In Your Role You Will
• Work with hard-to-place youth experiencing mental health and/or addictions issues, stemming from past complex traumas and/or abuse.
• Provide youth with healthy routines, recreational opportunities, a monthly clothing allowance, and transportation to school, community services, social and cultural outings.
• Build supportive and professional relationships with youth.
• Use a strength-based, harm reduction approach to support youth with developing and achieving personal goals.
• Teach age-appropriate life skills such as; communication, emotional well being, problem solving, cooking, cleaning, budgeting, being a positive role model, etc.
• Lead programming and activities promoting social/emotional /physical development to build competence and self-worth and achieve personal goals.
• Ensure individuals basic needs are met (personal care, life skills and social/occupational skills)
• Daily household tasks at the residence/program facility (May include cleaning, laundry or assisting the youth in care with the completion of these tasks, etc.)
• Drive children/youth (in your own vehicle) to and from school, medical appointments, recreational activities, community resources and support networks.
• Plan, support and/or deliver culturally appropriate programs, services, workshops, and outings which encourage youth to learn and participate in their culture.
• Contribute toward design, implementation and evaluation of individual service plans, program specific policies & procedures.
• Be able to deal with crisis situations.

*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
• Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Social Service Worker, Addictions, other Human Services field.
• 2 years experience with youth with complex trauma (group homes, shelters, youth programming and/or supported independent living) Practicum experience will be considered.
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, 3 yrs Canadian driving experience and clean driver’s abstract
• First Aid/CPR Certificate
• Suicide Intervention, Self Harm, Non-violent Crisis Intervention and Medication Administration training
• Indigenous awareness and cultural diversity training
