Position Overview  

The Pembina Institute is seeking a highly motivated individual to join its growing Renewables in Remote Communities (RiRC) Program as an analyst. This position would advance our ongoing work on energy policies to support Indigenous leadership and diesel reduction in remote Indigenous community across the country a potent challenge and opportunity for the clean energy transition that is occurring nationally. 

We are seeking a highly driven and resourceful person with two to five years of relevant technical experience, strong analytical skills, knowledge of climate and energy policy unique to remote communities, an understanding of the evolving relationship between Canada and Indigenous People, a solid work ethic, and a persistent drive to solve Canada's most prominent sustainability challenges. 

The Pembina Institute is providing research and analysis along with clean energy policy and regulatory guidance that is unique to the remote community space. This role will require engagement with diverse stakeholders, including Indigenous, provincial and federal governments, private and crown utilities, Indigenous communities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The goal is supporting the development and advocacy of good climate and energy policies and necessary regulatory improvements to prioritize Indigenous-led clean energy projects in remote communities, through solid research, technical and energy analysis and energy modelling in both energy supply and energy demand. 

This full-time position is anticipated to start in September 2022 and could be based out of any of our offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton or Toronto. The Pembina Institute features a hybrid workplace that does not require employees to be in an office full-time. Consideration may be given to candidates who live in northern or remote communities and who may require a flexible work location. The successful candidate will report to the Renewables in Remote Communities project manager, with support from senior analyst team members and the program director.

Roles and Responsibilities 

  • Conduct high-quality literature research on subjects related to the reduction of diesel fuel consumption in remote Indigenous communities across Canada, for renewable power, renewable heat and energy efficiency projects  
  • Conduct thorough technical, quantitative, and qualitative analyses of the deployment of clean energy projects in remote Indigenous communities 
  • Play a key role in updating and advancing key modelling and research within the Renewables in Remote Communities program 
  • Support the development of high-quality project deliverables, including reports, presentations, and Excel models 

Based on the successful candidate’s interest areas and backgrounds, more specific work areas could include: 

  • Forecasting and developing scenarios of clean energy technology deployment and associated reduction of diesel use and greenhouse gas emissions 
  • Examining clean energy policies (federal, provincial, territorial) that would support the acceleration of clean energy project development and Indigenous-led projects in remote communities 
  • Further analysis and quantification of diesel and energy subsidies applied to remote community diesel operation 

Skills and Qualifications  

Candidates must clearly reflect the following skills and experience in their application:  

  • Hold at least an undergraduate degree in energy/environmental science, engineering or science. Other fields (e.g. social sciences, political science) will also be considered. 
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 
  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations 
  • Be able to conduct quantitative and qualitative technical research in the area of energy and environment policy 
  • Have a good knowledge of electricity, heat, and renewable energy systems and technologies 
  • Have excellent Excel skills in quantification, data compilation, analysis, organizing large amounts of data 
  • Have excellent organizational and information collection skills: the ability to synthesis a lot of data, ensure completeness of data, sort out data discrepancies and estimate data gaps based on known high-quality data.  

Other Valuable Qualifications  

  • General knowledge of climate science and energy policy, and opportunities associated with energy, environmental and climate policy 
  • Ability to communicate complex technical matters in plain language 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide array of stakeholders 
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) 
  • Self-motivated and results oriented, with the ability to take initiative 
  • Work or educational experience on climate and energy related matters 
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change through educational, professional, and volunteer experiences

The salary rate is competitive for an analyst in the environmental non-profit sector and will be based on skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
