Position Title:  LINC Instructor, Linguistic Equity Living Lab

Department:  Community Innovation

Reports to:  Special Projects Manager, Community Innovation

 

Summary

 

The Linguistic Equity Living Lab LINC Instructor will work with the Special Projects Manager and Curriculum Developer to deliver curricula designed on decolonized & anti-racist teaching approaches to increase immigrant English language skills & their confidence to use them through English language learning curriculum, tools & resources. Classes will be delivered in a hybrid model (in-person and virtual) for 12 hours per week.  The Instructor will also coordinate between the team and learners to incorporate feedback into the curriculum on an ongoing basis along with organizing community dialogues.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Design, implement, and instruct English as an Additional Language classes in an experimental LINC program.
  • Design module plans, as well as daily lesson plans following the curriculum based on decolonial and anti-racist pedagogies.
  • Conduct on-going needs assessments with learners, assist them to set learning goals and develop lessons accordingly.
  • Design assessment tasks for on-going evaluation of learners’ progress based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks and PBLA guidelines.
  • Coordinate, host and facilitate targeted community engagement activities, including dialogues and surveys utilizing a range of interactive virtual (and potentially in-person) tools & approaches.
  • Prepare learners’ conference summary and progress reports. Conduct one-on-one interviews with learners to provide feedback on learning progress.
  • Provide computer-assisted instruction using language learning software, Zoom, Moodle and MS Office programs, as needed.
  • Integrate online resources and e-learning delivery tools, such as LearnIT2Teach in language instruction, as needed.
  • Maintain attendance records and other documentation, as required.
  • Works collaboratively with the Special Projects Manager and Curriculum Developer to make adjustments and improvements to course materials, as needed
  • Support the communication flow between students, volunteers, and Impact North Shore operational support staff.
  • Seek support and finds solutions to facilitate the smooth delivery of classroom instruction and administrative functions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Special Projects Manager, Community Innovation on the creation of an educational video for documentation of the pilot project and distribution to other English language learning organizations across the country.
  • Ensure the project is guided through a multi-sectoral, anti-oppression lens and centres decolonized approaches.
  • Direct Client Service: Provide direct settlement services and referrals to clients, as needed, paying special attention to clients expressing distress and trauma.

Qualifications:

 

  • TESOL or CELTA certificate from an accredited institution recognized by TESOL Canada
  • Minimum 1- 3 years of experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult newcomers.
  • Experience in teaching or knowledge of anti-racist and decolonized approaches to instruction.
  • Experience teaching online or in hybrid instruction formats.
  • Experience with adult education philosophy, including respect for the work and life experience, brought to the classroom by the adult learner
  • Understanding of current language training models, trends, challenges and opportunities
  • In depth understanding of and experience using Canadian Language Benchmarks and the LINC Curriculum Guidelines.
  • Experience working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds. Ability to identify barriers to access to promote equity and inclusion for a diverse student population
  • Experience in organizing and coordinating community engagement activities. Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships among diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Office Suite, Teams, Zoom, Moodle, and ability to learn and adapt to new technologies as needed

 

Additional Information

 

Hours: 28 - 35 hours/week

Salary Range: $31.00 - $34.00 per hour, dependent on experience

This is a hybrid position that requires regular in-office and remote work.
