The Senior Economist will lead project delivery including research design, analysis and knowledge dissemination to generate far sighted insights and stimulate new thinking related to innovation policy. The Senior Economist will lead and support the execution of specific projects across the following areas of focus at the Brookfield Institute:
- Jobs, Skills, and Technology Change: How are jobs and skills in Canada being impacted by technological change? How can Canada’s labour market adapt? What digital skills do Canadian workers need to be prosperous?
- Scale-ups: How do scale ups contribute to Canada’s economic prosperity? How can we better support scale-ups? Who benefits from scale up growth?
- Understanding Canada’s Innovation Economy: How innovative is Canada’s economy? How is it changing? How does it contribute to our shared prosperity?
- Technology, Technological Adoption, and R&D: How can we harness emerging technologies for Canada’s prosperity? How can we track the emergence of new technologies and understand their importance for Canada?
- Leads complex projects, from project planning to project close, with review and support from the Manager, Economic Research.
- Designs the overall research approach to achieve project objectives, with support from the Manager, Economic Research.
- Conducts quantitative research analysis to achieve project objectives.
- Develops clear and accessible communication materials for different stakeholder audiences.
- Supports the execution of projects in collaboration with the project team.
- Supports business development and process improvements.
To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Economics or related quantitative social sciences and other relevant disciplines.
- Requires at least 4 years of relevant work experience, including at least 3 years of immersed experience in one or more crafts, e.g. policy + government, AI policy, entrepreneurship policy, skills policy, social policy, quantitative research, economics, data science, qualitative research, futures, human centered design.
- Experience leading applied research and delivering high quality client service.
- Experience with relationship building with key stakeholders, government, community and industry partners.
- Strong project management and facilitation skills.
- Ability to build and motivate teams, and inspire members to innovate.
- Strong financial management skills, with ability to track a project budget.
- Exceptional writing and oral communication skills.
- Strong logical reasoning and intellectual curiosity.
- Proven ability to gather, synthesize and analyze complex information from a variety of sources, to identify trends in data and research, and to develop specific recommendations.
- Ability to work collaboratively with team members and external partners, and to work with a high degree of independence.
- Strong time management, organizational, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex issues, and make research accessible to maximize the impact of the Institute’s work.
- Knowledge of qualitative research tools, e.g., jurisdictional scans, case study research, literature reviews, and expert interviews.
- Knowledge of key issues relating to innovation and entrepreneurship in Canada and an understanding of the Institute’s mission.
- Resilience and flexibility, comfort with ambiguity and complexity.
- Computer proficiency, including the use of the Microsoft Office and Google Suite of products.
