Literacy Central Vancouver Island

Nanaimo Literacy Association, doing business as Literacy Central Vancouver Island (LCVI), was incorporated in March 1990 as a community-based non-profit, registered charity. For 31 years LCVI has been offering literacy programs in the Central Vancouver Island region. Our Adult, Family and Indigenous programs are the cornerstone of our literacy work.  Through our literacy programs, we assist with reading, writing, math, and computers and our programs extend to offsite locations throughout Parksville, Nanoose, Nanaimo Corrections Centre, and Snuneymuxw and Snaw-naw-as First Nations.

We are currently looking for a new member to join our team that has a passion for literacy and community outreach.

Volunteer Tutor Coordinator

Job Type:  25 hours a week Part-Time

Wage:        with MERCS, equivalent to $25.00/hour; plus benefits

Details: 

The Volunteer Coordinator will have three areas of focus: recruitment, resource development and retention.

This will be conducted by:

• Recruiting and training new volunteers tutors, keeping a database of volunteer information and skills, keeping volunteers informed
• Developing and maintaining complete and accurate records including volunteer policies, procedures, position descriptions, standards of conduct and criminal background check
• Developing and maintaining a comprehensive recruitment, orientation, training, retention, and recognition plan for individual and group volunteers to ensure that all volunteers are knowledgeable and feel valued.
• Evaluation of tutoring services in collaboration with Program Coordinators
• Perform exit interviews of tutors as required with Program Coordinators
• The Volunteer Coordinator will also work with Executive Director to secure funding for position beyond year 2.

Qualifications & Experience: 

• Degree in relevant field, or a combination of education and related experience
• Must have 1 to 2 years experience working with volunteers
• An in depth understanding of literacy and all it entails
• Computer proficiency and extensive database knowledge required
• Demonstrated high level of oral and written communication skills
• Proven interpersonal skills
• Excellent planning and organizational skills
• In depth understanding of equity, reconciliation, diversity and inclusion issues with particular appreciation of the issues faced by women, gender and sex minorities, Indigenous people and people of color.
