POSITION: CHAPLAIN – GROUP & VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

JOB PURPOSE:

The Chaplain / Group & Volunteer Coordinator will provide intentional, directed, spiritual care for residents. The position will organize and facilitate spiritual formation and development opportunities; provide Christian leadership in planning, directing, coordinating and monitoring volunteers within the facility to assist with residents and staff with a range of duties as assigned; organize, promote and monitor social activities and programs related to residents.

JOB DUTIES:

The Chaplain / Group & Volunteer Coordinator will:

·         Prays with and or leads people to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits

·         Plans and conducts creative worship services, pastoral care programs (including on-going visitation), and Bible studies for residents as applicable

·         Assists residents towards achieving personal and spiritual well being

·         Works as a team member with the institution’s administrative and other pastoral care givers in corporate problem-solving for the benefit of the program and individuals; acts as a member of a case management team

·         Communicates in an empathetic and influential manner with residents, families, staff and community agencies; maintains written records / logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information)

·         Recruits, interviews, trains, orients, documents, and monitors all chaplaincy volunteers, coordinating their involvement in program delivery

·         Develop and maintain involvement of Christian groups with weekly spiritual activities, special events and workshops

·         Liaises with representatives of other faith communities as needed

·         Knows and acts in accordance with security procedures of the institution to ensure safety and confidentiality of information

·         Reviews safety, physical décor and set-up of chapel or pastoral care areas

·         May serve on Salvation Army Councils and Committees

·         Promote volunteering (internally and externally) through recruitment and publicity strategies and campaigns

·         Generate appropriate volunteering opportunities and role descriptions based on the needs of the organization

·         Develop, monitor and evaluate outside activities and community engagement activities for the residents and write reports for funders if required

·         Liaise with different ministry units of The Salvation Army or with other stakeholders

·         Liaise with different colleges of social studies and Coordinate different programs and activities that are implemented by the practicum students.

·         Support planning and coordination of in-house programs and its activities

·         Responsible for the planning, development and execution of a variety of recreational programs

·         Performs other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

·         Duties require employee to work in Grace Mansion – an 84 room, four storey Residence located at 596 East Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver.  Responsibilities will involve working from a designated work station, but will also involve movement through the residential areas, and general building.  The employee may at times be subject to hazardous or disagreeable conditions in the performance of their duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL & EXPERIENCE:

• A primary commitment to Jesus Christ and a passion to minister to persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds
• Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Christian Counseling or equivalent experience
• One year but less than three years of prior related experience, including, experience in a pastoral position dealing with death, dying and incarceration.
• Experience working with marginalized people, including people recovering from addictions, and experiencing mental health issues
• Training in Christian theology and pastoral counseling with specific training in emotional and spiritual care and chaplaincy would be an asset.
• Experience in church and community related ministries
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• An understanding of Salvation Army Social Services programs
• Ability to interact individually and facilitate support groups
• Certification in First Aid/CPR
• Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
• Understanding of Universal precautions
• Computer skills, with ability to work with Microsoft Office programs, specifically Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Fluent spoken and written English
• Criminal Record Review Act clearance to work with vulnerable adults

OTHER CONDITIONS / REQUIREMENTS

• Successful obtainment of the Criminal Record Review Act clearance to work with vulnerable adults through the Criminal Records Review Program

• Successful obtainment of clearance through The Salvation Army Child Abuse Registry

SALARY                     :           Pay Band 4

TERMS                       :           Regular, Full-time

HOURS                      :           32 hours/week (with one half-hour unpaid meal break).

DAYS & TIME            :           Sunday to Wednesday (8:00a.m. – 4:30p.m.)
