VISION

To support individuals with developmental disabilities to meet their potential and have full lives in an inclusive, supportive community.

 

The Recreation Therapist is required to plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based programs for adults with developmental disabilities. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess individuals’ recreational and social needs using observation, medical, records, nutritional requirements and discussions with other internal direct support professionals, individuals’ families, and guardians.
  • Develop creative an innovative recreational plans and programs that meet individuals(s) needs and interests and evaluate their success.
  • Plan and implement interventions to assist staff in supporting the individual(s) to meet his or her goals.
  • Engage individual(s) in therapeutic activities, such as exercise, games, and community outings.
  • Mentor staff and assist individual(s) in developing social skills needed to become or remain independent.
  • Teach individual(s) about ways to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression.
  • Document and analyze individual(s) progress and evaluate interventions for effectiveness to remove barriers that prevent an individual from participating in meaningful recreation and leisure activities.
  • Assist in maintaining appropriate records including assessments and evaluations and charting of planned progress detailing individual(s) participation.
  • Educate individual(s) accessing programming, and mentor colleagues, about the physical, mental, social and emotional health benefits of participating in recreation and leisure activities.
  • Assist individual(s) to practice skills and improve their ability to participate in leisure and community activities as independently as possible.
  • Maintain effective two-way communication and strong relationships with individual(s), families, and staff keeping them informed of current and upcoming events.
  • Assist and include others in the individual(s) social network to create and maintain a safe welcoming environment for participation.
  • Communicate in a professional, timely, accurate and respectful way with individual(s), families, guardians, staff and community members.
  • Work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Diploma or equivalent post-secondary education in a relevant discipline; preferably, with additional specialized training and 1 – 3 years progressively more responsible experience in a relevant discipline/setting. Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right and responsibility to define and pursue their life choices and pursue active participation in the community and residential setting.
  • An understanding of the opportunities and options available to persons with disabilities plus demonstrated cultural and ethnic sensitivity. 
  • Basic computer literacy using Microsoft Office products and well-developed writing/reporting skills that meet the requirements to support service delivery, basic Internet search skills, and the use of basic data reporting and analysis tools.
  • Well-developed observation and interpretive skills to support judgments about what actions will resolve issues, this includes the ability to identify observable changes in behavior and attitude, knowing when it is appropriate to ask for help from a more experienced person.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated coaching, mentoring, and coordinating skills.
  • The ability to work in physically-challenging situations, if required by the specific situation.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • 37.5 hrs./wk. Monday to Friday during the day.  Occasional  evenings and the possibility of weekends for special events.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (maintained), 2M Liability Insurance (required annually) Driver’s Abstract (required every 3 years) and use of a personal vehicle are requirements for this position.
  • Vulnerable Sector Security Clearance (to be provided every 3 years)
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification
  • Candidates should have received a full series of a COVID-19 vaccine authorized by Health Canada, or any combination of such vaccines (subject to human rights exemption).
