Purpose of Position
The vision of Wildlife Rescue Association of British Columbia is to continually improve the welfare of urban wildlife. Our mission is to provide leadership in rehabilitating wildlife and in promoting the welfare of wild animals in the urban environment.
We run a wildlife hospital located on a single site at the edge of Burnaby Lake. We treat over 6,000 wild birds and bats each year and provide public education through 30,000 calls to our Wildlife Helpline. Our Business Operations department plans, coordinates and oversees all our programs including development, communications, resources and volunteering.
Each year, 300 volunteers participate in a range of positions both on and off site. We are currently seeking a volunteer to assist in the important role of new volunteer recruitment for our largest programs, through facilitating virtual group interviews (called Meet & Greets).
All volunteers must be 16 years or older and provide a Criminal Record Check, proof of up-to-date tetanus vaccination and full Covid-19 vaccination.
We are looking for:
• A friendly, positive attitude as this role is often the first point of contact that a new
volunteer has with Wildlife Rescue;
• Great communication skills including:
o Comfort speaking in front of a group of people and leading discussions;
o Strong ability to deliver information in an easily digestible manner;
o Motivating and encouraging people to join in a conversation;
• Understanding of human behaviour and the skills we are looking for;
• Computer literacy – ability to learn new programs quickly;
• Experience of recruitment and screening an asset; and
• Experience of using Better Impact volunteer platform an asset.
The Volunteer Recruitment Assistant is expected to ensure the highest standards of practice are achieved and maintained in accordance with the mission, vision and values of WRA, and to ensure adherence to all policies and legal requirements. All data and information will remain the property of Wildlife Rescue and be treated confidentially.
• Co-host group interviews (called Meet & Greets) virtually with a group of up to 16 applicants;
• Deliver information about volunteering with Wildlife Rescue and answer questions that arise, following up with the Volunteer Program team as necessary;
• Facilitate the group activity, monitoring each participant’s input;
• Identify suitable candidates;
• Update the applicants’ qualifications in our database (Better Impact);
• Send a template follow up email to each of the participants;
• Contact the Volunteer Program Manager with a handover for the session, including any applicants that need further screening; and
• Recording and logging all your hours on MyImpactPage.
• Suggesting improvements to the process is always welcomed, as well as taking on additional projects if interested.
All Wildlife Rescue volunteers start with a minimum commitment of 100 hours. Currently Meet & Greets happen once a month, with one 1.5 hour Animal Care Meet & Greet followed by one 1.5 hour Transport Meet & Greet on the same day. The regularity will likely reduce during the winter months. Sessions are scheduled for weekday evenings and weekends, and the schedule for the season is prepared in advance. Following the sessions, there is a further couple of hours to complete the administrative side of the role. This role is conducted remotely.
