This full time permanent 40 hour per week position is a member of the Communitas Executive Team and reports to the CEO. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides oversight and strategic leadership to the organization. This position is responsible for the overall financial operations of the organization.


1. Provides financial oversight and strategic management to the organization, including the following:
• Supervises/provides overall guidance to the accounting department, including systems, policies and department employees
• In collaboration with the Chief Human Resources Officer oversees payroll/benefits department
• In collaboration with the Program Director/Executive Team negotiates with funding agencies regarding contract, funding, proposals, etc.
• Oversees preparation and distributions of all financial statements and financial reports for the organization
• Ensures development of budgets and long-term financial plans
• Provides financial reporting to the Communitas Board through the Finance Committee and under the direction of the CEO
• Communicates with staff via meetings, memos, etc. regarding finances, budgets and policy
• Maintains the financial policies of the organization and ensures adherence to the COA Financial Standards
• Communicates with funding bodies regarding financial priorities and contractual arrangements
• In collaboration with the finance committee of the board, gives direction and oversight to investments, capital planning and financing decisions
2. General Organizational Responsibilities:
• Implements Communitas’ Strategic Direction and actively supports, promotes and enhances the culture
• Together with the Executive Team, develops compensation levels and job categories for Communitas staff
• Participates in decisions regarding allocation of funds, including those outside of program budgets
• Models and acts as guardian for Communitas’ Mission Statement and Core Values
• In participation with the Executive Team and the CEO, and with regard to risk management, identifies and analyzes the nature, severity and frequency of risks
• Works to champion an organizational and team approach to quality improvement and initiatives
• Spearheads innovation in relation to technology related to accounting and payroll functions
3. Networks with outside agencies and regulatory bodies as necessary
4. Work collaboratively with auditors to ensure timely audited financial statements
5. Actively supports, promotes and enhances the culture of Communitas
6. Other duties as necessary


• Master Degree required (i.e. Business Admin, Finance, etc.) or CPA designation
• 5 + years proven track record in management & leadership a related financial position
• Prior management or leadership experience in the charitable/non-profit sector as asset
• 2+ years of personal or professional experience in the social services sector an asset
• A personal philosophy that is in line with Communitas’ philosophy of service & support for people with disabilities
• Strong mediation and conflict management skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Demonstrated teamwork, leadership and supervisory skills
• Well-developed planning, organizing, comptroller and administrative skills
• Flexibility in working hours: Participation at meetings, events, etc. may involve evening/weekend work
