The Role:

Through innovative practices, Youth Liaisons mobilize youth-serving agencies, stakeholders, youth, and communities to address crime and disorder. Through a community development lens, Youth Liaisons empower active participants in creating unique, sustainable and positive community change. Youth Liaisons strive to engage with youth and bring their voice to the table regarding community safety issues, with the intention that youth feel empowered to become active members of their communities and feel a sense of community connection.

Youth Liaisons are part of the Neighborhood Empowerment Team (NET) which includes the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Police Service, and The United Way of Alberta. NET’s mission is to work together with communities to build collaborative solutions to address identified safety issues. NET engages with diverse individuals, communities, and professionals by utilizing community development principles, approaches, and practices.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Human Services, with related experience
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working with vulnerable youth
  • Experience with community development
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary partnership with youth, community members and stakeholders
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with leading community-based projects
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Computer literacy
  • Experience and savvy in using social media platforms to engage and inspire community and partners 

Mandatory Requirements: 

  • Enhanced Security Clearance and Child and Youth Intervention Record Check
  • Standard First Aid Level C CPR and ASIST Suicide Intervention Training
  • Reliable vehicle with 2-million liability insurance, 5-year driver abstract and valid driver’s license
  • When eligible, registration and continued membership with a professional organization

Key Responsibilities:

  • Trauma-informed care approach to community engagement and development
  • Lead/support projects through research, surveying, engaging with youth and community agencies, collaborating with appropriate professionals, applying for grants, hosting events, and creating resources
  • Build capacity among community members, youth, and agencies
  • Engage with community members by attending events and sharing information about NET
  • Engage with youth in their communities to explore barriers in regard to community safety and engagement
  • Participate in collaborative tables
  • Documenting and tracking project updates and capacity building activities
  • Assess community safety issues by engaging with youth and community stakeholders, utilizing surveys, and aggregating internal and external data
  • Engage in a multidisciplinary team with Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton partners
  • Engage in NET Youth Liaisons social media accounts to share resources
  • Schedule meetings and adapt to working in various environments

Working Conditions: 

  • Flexible scheduled weekday shifts, including evening and weekend work
  • Work in hybrid format
  • Work within assigned spaces in Edmonton Police Service stations
  • Work as a formal multidisciplinary team that includes Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton
  • Working with diverse communities that are impacted by intersectionalities and systemic barriers

  • Training – comprehensive onboarding/orientation process includes service-specific training and agency-wide core training.
  • Feedback – a strong supervision model that provides regular formal and informal opportunities for feedback
  • Performance coaching – formal and informal coaching regarding the development of personal and professional growth and development.

Compensation:

The Family Centre is committed to employee wellbeing and development. The comprehensive compensation package offered to employees reflects those values and is competitive within the marketplace.
