Position Title:     Senior Finance Manager

The Senior Finance Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.  The incumbent will be a designated accountant (CPA, CMA or CGA), and have a working background in the unionized, non-profit sector, and a strong interest in progressionThe incumbent will be responsible for managing and overseeing the Finance department and all its functions including maintaining all files and records, ensuring the smooth financial operation of the organization, including overseeing and supervising the bookkeeper. The Senior Finance Manger will also be responsible for the oversight of and processing of the full cycle, bi-weekly payroll for union/ non-union, hourly and salaried staff, accurately in accordance with applicable legislation, planning, developing, and organizing new business procedures related to finance and payroll.  The successful candidate will demonstrate ability and willingness for role progression within the department.  



  • Provide oversight and supervision of the bookkeeper and have hands on involvement in all accounting operational cycles including bank reconciliations, journal entries, payroll, capital assets, accounts payable, invoicing & receivables, revenue and deferred revenue and statutory reporting, using QuickBooks software; 
  • Responsible for the oversight and accurate preparation and processing of bi-weekly payroll in a unionized environment, with a mixture of full time and part time employees using Dayforce and Ceridian in compliance with payroll legislation;
  • Manage cash balances to optimize cash flow and revenue, monitoring current and projected cash flows and alerting managers to potential issues; 
  • Maintain oversight of accounts payable and credit cards, including review of payments and cheques prepared by bookkeeper for correct coding and ensures supporting documentation attached before seeking signing approval; 
  • Maintain a log of all donations reconciled to general ledger, and prepares donation receipts to donors on a monthly basis;  
  • Designs and monitors internal controls to ensure that resources are safeguarded and that processes ensure compliance with regulatory requirements; 
  • Strong organizational skills will ensure a filing system is maintained to support preparation for annual external audit and other needs.  Experience with Shared drive, Cloud storage and other digital/cloud applications is preferred;   
  • Assist with preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations and support external accountant with preparation of monthly financial statements in compliance with GAAP for finance committee; 
  • Prepares monthly departmental expenditures reports with analysis of budget to actual variances for department and senior managers; 
  • Participates in annual organizational budget preparation, scenarios and input of budget into QuickBooks 
  • Assist in annual audit preparation including preparation of schedules and working papers, and liase with external auditors as needed;  
  • Supports operations and departmental managers with annual grant budgeting and applications as needed;  
  • Knowledge and experience with moving data from CRM systems is preferred; 
  • Works with department leads and the Executive Director to manage the financial reporting and administrative requirements for all program grant contracts including reporting, budget review, cash flow planning & forecasting; 
  • Ensure compliance with all provincial and federal government reporting. Preparation assistance with T3010 , T4, HST and other regulatory reporting required: 
  • Develops staff and self and committed to improvement and progression. 



  • Work environment is typically in the office, local facilities, external offices and/or at home; in generally agreeable conditions such as those found inside offices or equivalent work areas 
  • No travel or regularly scheduled overtime is associated with this position 
  • Flexibility for monthly Finance committee meetings, occasionally after hours




Education and Certifications:  

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline from an accredited university; 
  • Successful completion of Accounting designation e.g. CPA, CGA or CMA; 
  • Completion of the Canadian Payroll Association/ Payroll Manager Certificate will be considered an asset; 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ESA and payroll legislation and the ability to interpret and accurately  apply the collective agreement; 
  • Proficient with Quick Books Desktop, experience with QB Online also desirable; 
  • Proficient in the use of Excel (pivot tables, vlookups) and all other aspects of Microsoft office, Google suite and Microsoft 365 suite  


  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience working in a similar senior Accounting capacity; 
  • Minimum 5 years experience in oversight and/or processing full cycle payroll using Ceridian and Dayforce in a unionized environment for hourly and salary employees; 
  • Knowledge of the key business processes associated with Finance, Human Resources and Payroll; 
  • Demonstrated  experience with leading and managing staff; 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience using Payroll systems such as Ceridian, additional experience with HRIS systems e.g Dayforce is desirable; 
  • Experience in systems implementation would be considered an asset 
  • Demonstrated reliability and availability to attend scheduled shifts
