This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified leader, who is passionate about Social Work in Alberta, to lead the newly formed Professional Association! We are looking for an Executive Director who values relationships, advocates for change, and will bring their innovative approach to unifying Social Workers in Alberta. 


As the Executive Director of the Social Workers Association of Alberta, you will be instrumental in giving power to the voice of Social Workers in this province.



About SWAA: 

The recently formed Social Workers Association of Alberta has the following mandate: to promote and advocate on behalf of the social work profession in Alberta; to connect members; to provide services, supports, and resources to help members achieve professional excellence; and to promote and support the advancement of social justice.     


The Role:  

Reporting to the Board of the Social Workers Association of Alberta, the Executive Director (ED) is the association’s first and only employee and provides essential leadership in co-creating and advancing the association’s mission and vision, strategic plan, membership engagement plan, and association culture.   


The ED presents with strong commitment in promoting affirmative actions that challenge all forms of oppression, including initiatives on anti-racism, anti-homophobia, anti-ageism, anti-ableism, anti – discrimination, as well as in decolonization processes. This commitment should be reflected within the membership, the profession's strategic direction, and in the activities of the association.        


The position is a part-time (0.5 - 0.7 FTE), contract position with wage ranging from $56 to $91/hour.  Compensation will be based on skills and experience.   


This is a remote position and the successful candidate can be located anywhere in Alberta. 


The Responsibilities: 

The ED develops and fosters key stakeholder relationships. The ED is tasked with day-to-day operation and management of association business including planning, organizing, budgeting, marketing, facilitating, and directing all association operations in compliance with association policy and in partnership with association members. The ED is responsible for collaborative and supportive people management including working with volunteers and committees.

Success in the First Year: 

Always in alignment with the association’s policy and objectives to support social workers, advocate for social justice and promote the social work profession, the ED will:  

  • Develop and implement a robust membership engagement plan that successfully attracts and retains membership.  This may include: 
  • Co-develop strong, strategic relationships with key people and organizations. This includes the SWAA Board, ACSW, CASW, association volunteers, and others.  
  • Develop and implement a sustainable business model, including: membership fee schedule that is inclusive and sustainable, and other lines of revenue generation.  
  • Develop a strategic planning process and, in collaboration with the board and involving SWAA members, create a strategic plan for the association. 
  • Develop relationships with other key people and organizations  


Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes 



  • Candidates who have social work education, professional social work experience, and who meet the requirements to be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers are highly preferred. 
  • Experience with one or more of the following:  
  • strategic planning (ability to think strategically and has experience participating in or leading organizational planning) 
  • governance (familiarity and understanding of governance roles and responsibilities, either gain through board experience or education) 
  • financial management (ability to read and understand financial statements) 
  • risk oversight (understanding of organizational risks) 
  • change leadership (ability to support stakeholders through change)  
  • board or committee or business development (understanding of activities needed to set up board/committee/business) 
  • community engagement (building support of a common interest)  
  • promotions, marketing, communication (building strategies to attract and promote members/support) 



Skills and Attributes   

  • Transformative and relational leader, who is empowering, inspiring, engaging, and an enthusiastic activator 
  • Facilitator and connector who builds consensus, listens and responds to stakeholder needs. 
  • Strategic thinker who is willing to dive into the details 
  • Action-oriented while recognizing that the process is as important as the outcome  
  • Operationalize and integrate professional values indicated in the Social Work Code of Ethics 
  • Passionate about Social Work and serving the needs of Alberta Social Workers, including supporting their professional development and creating spaces for their voices to be amplified 
  • Able to build and maintain a solid and diverse membership base to support the viability of the association 
  • Committed to accountability and strong relationship skills  
  • Flexible and a creative thinker
