About the Organization

Established in 2009, The Roberta Bondar Foundation (RBF) connects people to the natural world, inspiring curiosity, respect for and conservation of the environment while building healthier lives. It uses environmental science and visual art through photography to generate engagement, stimulate creativity and promote ethical responsibility for the environment. Our work is based on four program pillars: i) the Bondar Challenge, ii) Traveling Exhibitions and Learning Experiences, iii) Speaker Series, Workshops and Seminars, and iv) Research and Publications. We are a small but effective team of people dedicated to STEAM education and bridging the gap between humans and nature. Staff and volunteers work closely together and often assist each other in tasks and projects. Our work environment offers many opportunities to expand skills in a variety of areas.

 

Position Description

This role has a primary focus on research related to the Foundation’s research project, Space for Birds, and coordinates various related initiatives and relationships. It will also involve other administrative and organizational needs as required. On occasion, you will represent the Foundation at outreach events. While this is a remote position, you must be able to visit sites within the GTA or participate in fieldwork when needed. Some travel outside of the GTA may be required for special projects.

 

Responsibilities

  • Research Coordination
    • Maintain our detailed inventory of field photography and space imagery
    • Liaise with project partners to ensure completion of tasks and plans for fieldwork
    • Use ArcGIS and Google Earth to create and update maps on endangered and threatened migratory avian species
    • Conduct literature reviews and relevant research and maintain current information on our species of focus
  • Project & Program Coordination
    • Support projects by keeping track of tasks on ClickUp and working with others to ensure project goals are met
    • Conduct supplementary research on publishing and the development of exhibitions
    • Provide input on our existing suite of program resources and suggest improvements or additional learning tools and where appropriate participate in the development of those resources
    • Contribute to board reports
    • Supervise and mentor summer staff
    • Update information on our website as needed
  • Communications and Social Media
    • Draft, design and schedule posts
    • Maintain and grow the Foundation’s social media presence by interacting with our audiences and following our social media strategy
    • Assess our approach to social media and work with team members to improve our strategy when necessary
    • Develop content for our seasonal e-newsletter, WINGS

 

Requirements

  • Post secondary graduate from a STEAM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics)
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and Google Earth
  • Experience in project coordination and supervising seasonal staff
  • Comfort with navigating and maintaining database information with a strong ability to learn new database software
  • Experience using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and other platforms
  • Experience with graphic design software, specifically Canva
  • Experience with website design and/or management using Wordpress
  • Experience with Constant Contact or another e-newsletter design software
  • Strong research and organization skills
  • Experience conducting literature reviews
  • Strong written communication skills for drafting emails, reports and digital content
  • Great interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and take on a diverse set of tasks
  • Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks and responsibilities but comfortable asking for help and guidance when needed
  • Highly motivated, great self-starter, able to work with limited supervision
  • Interest in science communication, environmental education and the arts
  • Photography skills including still and/or videography desirable
