Position Summary:

The Broadway Youth Resource Centre (BYRC), located in Vancouver, BC is currently looking for a Food Program Facilitator to support the kitchen program.  We are seeking someone who has strong food service experience and is familiar with and interested in working with youth ages 13-24. We serve a diverse population of youth, and this position requires mentorship to our youth volunteers. In addition, this position may include one to two (1- 2) hours of vegetable garden maintenance weekly.

In addition to cooking and providing meals to participants of our services, this position will also be responsible for working with Resource Room staff to plan and deliver community events such as barbeques and feasts.

This position is crucial to our meal program and includes evening work. May include some weekend work.  

Primary Duties:

1)Provide a healthy, nutritious meal for youth:

  • Work independently to create a hot meal for lunch and dinner for between 30-60 youth, 5 days/week
  • Regularly allocate Greater Vancouver Food Bank donations to supplement food service.
  • Plan menus and manage kitchen inventory to the standards per Food Safe and National Food Guide
  • provide guidance and mentorship to youth who may be volunteering in the kitchen

2)Support the BYRC team in day-to-day operations of the food program:

  • Work independently to create a hot meal for lunch and dinner for between 30-60 youth, 5 days/week
  • Regularly allocate Greater Vancouver Food Bank donations to supplement food service.
  • Plan menus and manage kitchen inventory to the standards per Food Safe and National Food Guide
  • provide guidance and mentorship to youth who may be volunteering in the kitchen

3) Maintain the health and safety of the kitchen:

  • Perform a variety of cleaning duties throughout the shift
  • Perform a variety of duties that include protocols such as temperature checks of various fridges/freezers, warming equipment
  • Ensure the food-safe environment of the food programs

Academic and Job Experience Required:

Professional Cook Level One with 2 years’ experience working in a commercial kitchen. A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Basic Requirements:

  • Criminal Record Check, including vulnerable sector
  • Minimum Food Safe Level 1
  • Knowledge of Food Safe procedures including temperature checks, cleaning to avoid cross contamination for compliance to licensing requirements
  • Standard first aid and CPR certificate
  • NVCI training
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor young people

Desired Requirements:

  • Knowledge of gardening procedures
  • Experience with incorporating diverse cultural foods into menus
  • Experience working with young people
  • Desire to mentor young people to build pre-employment skills
  • Catering or banquet experience

Salary Range:   $27.81/hour – $29.00/hour, plus benefit package (100% employer-paid)
