About the Role
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Marketing & Communications Manager is a master wordsmith who designs and implements all aspects of Startup Canada’s communication strategies. With a passion for supporting entrepreneurs, the Manager is responsible for development and execution of the Marketing & Communications Strategy for the organization, working closely with the team to create written content, and manage the organization’s program content including website content, newsletters, social media, and blog posts. The Manager is also responsible to help increase awareness of Startup Canada through thoughtful and compelling storytelling by convening diverse voices of entrepreneurs and ecosystem leaders.
This position is based out of our office in Ottawa, ON and/or remote. If remote, Startup Canada brings the team together once minimum per year for a team retreat.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Marketing Communications Strategy and Operations
Lead and implement overall communications and marketing strategy and digital marketing initiatives for Startup Canada to elevate our overall brand awareness from Coast to Coast to Coast and maximize conversion and retention rates of entrepreneurs engaged in our programming.
Develop and lead brand architecture and content strategy for Startup Canada to position our organization for future growth and to position Startup Canada as the go-to support organization for early-stage entrepreneurs and the authority on startups in Canada.
Grow and nurture Startup Canada’s audience across all platforms.
Lead and oversee the creation of individualized communications strategies for each Startup Canada program and initiative in partnership with the Marketing and Communications Officer and Program teams.
Leverage data driven insights to inform marketing and communications related decisions. Analyze and report on key performance indicators to drive engagement and conversion.
Develop and implement public relations strategies to support brand building initiatives and promotions, in partnership with external consultants.
Manage and oversee email marketing campaigns and build effective target audiences and segments for every message to drive engagement and performance against KPI goals
Develop marketing and campaign briefs to define requirements and goals and lead planning meetings with members from across the organization
Manage the development of partner marketing toolkits and press kits to promote flagship programming and events in consultation with the Programs Team.
Conduct post-mortems at the end of each campaign and document key learnings and outcomes and ensure they are communicated to team members.
Help to define and develop processes within marketing to improve efficiency and cross-departmental collaboration.
Track, analyze and measure all owned and earned media.
Conduct ongoing content, keyword, and URL audits to improve user and search engine relevance of key pages
Provide day-to-day management of Marketing and Communications Officer to execute on marketing communication activities. Provide ongoing performance management, recognition and coaching.
Manage the development, design, content, distribution and evaluation of external communications.
Responsible for maintaining consistent and cohesive key messaging and brand positioning for Startup Canada and its programs.
Write and produce compelling external communications content for the website, newsletter, program marketing and sponsor partnerships.
Partner with the Design Manager to develop marketing materials and graphics that amplify the impact of written content where required.
Write social media content, and presentation material for Startup Canada CEO.
Oversee and coordinate translation of materials that are required in a second language.
In collaboration with the CEO and Managing Director, support in the development of internal communications for the organization.
Obtain quotes from sponsors and program participants to use as part of content creation.
Skills and Knowledge
Minimum 3-5 years experience managing marketing, communications and/or public relations for a company/organization and minimum of 1-2 years experience managing people - both internal team members and external suppliers and partners
Strong interpersonal skills and communications skills to maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally.
A self-starter who is adaptable and possesses creative problem solving skills.
Exceptional ability to write and produce content that captures an audience’s attention through creative, articulate, and original writing.
Strong editing and proofreading skills with proven attention to style, tone and detail.
Strong knowledge of website analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics) with strong analytical skills and data-driven thinking.
Working knowledge and understanding of SEO best practices for content creation and website optimization
Solid understanding of email marketing best practices and CASL/CAN-SPAM compliance
Ability to quickly understand and translate a program’s vision, purpose, and operations into written content.
Strategic mindset with ability to execute multiple communications strategies on deadline with a high degree of autonomy.
Project management and organizational skills to manage many different moving pieces of a communications strategy.
Knowledge of entrepreneurial best practices, small businesses, marketing, data management and strategies to support entrepreneurs.
Strong digital literacy and computer skills, including the ability to use social media tools, ActiveCampaign, Google suite, Canva, Notion and Slack. Experience using media monitoring tools is also an asset.
Willingness to be flexible and versatile in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.
Preference will be given to bilingual (English and French) candidates.
