About the Role

The Program Lead, Startup Global provides leadership, oversight, and execution for the annual Startup Global flagship program. With a passion for supporting entrepreneurs who are interested in scaling internationally, this person is an expert project manager who skillfully juggles the responsibilities of program execution, and program communications while keeping stakeholders up to date and included in the process. This role is hands-on and involves working as part of a Team, and working independently with a high level of autonomy and accountability. The Program Lead, Startup Global has the opportunity, and responsibility to shape programming, develop educational initiatives, pitch competitions, and international partnerships and impact entrepreneurs in doing so.

This position is based out of our office in Ottawa, ON and or remote. If remote, Startup Canada brings the team together once minimum per year for a team retreat, in addition to team travel for program delivery across the country.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Program Administration

  • On-time and on-budget delivery of the annual Startup Global program.
  • Develop and revise programs to meet the needs of globally-aspiring entrepreneurs on an annual basis. Works with the CEO, and Managing Director to develop new initiatives including workshops, bootcamps, webinars, pitch competitions, 1 on 1 advisory support with subject matter experts, and campaigns highlighting entrepreneurs going global.
  • Provide strategic oversight and direct all aspects of assigned programs.
  • Partner with communications and design personnel to develop communications and marketing elements of the programs including copywriting.
  • The Program Lead is responsible for program recruitment of a diverse cohort of entrepreneurs from across Canada, and across a wide variety of industries, with support from the extended team. This includes a commitment to gender parity across all program elements - helping women-identifying entrepreneurs export is a large focus of this program!
  • Partner with the Ecosystem Partnership Manager to identify export support organizations who can provide value to the program (including in kind support, speakers, and promotion of their offerings through the program)
  • Key point of contact for all program sponsors; responding to sponsor questions and providing updates on event details and process. This includes program data, survey data, and ongoing program KPIs.
  • Key point of contact for entrepreneurs looking to learn more about the program, including monitoring the Startup Global email, and inquiries through HQ.
  • Develop all sponsor reports, and track contract requirements in partnership with the Managing Director.
  • Provide support for program content creation including website content, partner logos and integrations, and social media copy in partnership with the communications team.
  • Responsible for reviewing all program applications and recommending semi finalists/finalists for various pitch competitions.
  • Responsible for identifying judges for various pitch competitions (from the Startup Canada communities, entrepreneur network, private sector partners, and investors)
  • Recruit, and engage high profile speakers, and established entrepreneurs to participate, train, and educate entrepreneurs in Startup Canada’s programs.
  • Ensure excitement, satisfaction, and an excellent overall Startup Canada experience by everyone involved in the program.

Content Creation

  • Design master program plans to ensure the coordination of all logistics for program events (both for online and in-person events) in Notion and Google Sheets.
  • Oversee the progression of the completion of logistical details in accordance with the master plan.
  • Oversee all moving parts of a program (both online and in-person) and troubleshoot problems that arise.
  • Oversee the Communications Strategy for each program with the Communications and Marketing team, and support the development of content.
  • Monitor live chat and feed moderators’ questions during live events.
  • Host events, when required.
  • Oversee all communications to attendees and provide reminders.
  • Confirm, communicate, and arrange logistics with key speakers for program events including technical prep and script writing as required.
  • Create briefings for event speakers and sponsors.
  • Conduct post-event communications with sponsors, judges and applicants and post event links on social media platforms.
  • Develop a national narrative positioning Startup Canada as a thought leader in Canada and globally in fostering an entrepreneurial nation and startup communities.
  • Ensure the ongoing relevance and impact of programming beyond its immediate duration.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent organization, multi-tasking and coordination skills to effectively manage many different moving parts of a program.
  • An understanding of exporting across multiple industries and a familiarity with trade tariffs, international intellectual property, and export promotion (2-3+ years of experience is an asset).
  • Familiarity with the offering of key partners including Export Development Canada, the Trade Commissioner Service, and UPS, in addition to other export focused ecosystem partners. .
  • Certified International Trade Professional (CITP) designation from the Forum for International Trade is an asset.
  • A passion for helping entrepreneurs go global!
  • Strategic mindset with ability to understand the whole picture of a program along with all the details.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communications skills to maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Strong event coordination and management skills (both for in-person and online events).
  • Knowledge of general entrepreneurial best practices, small businesses, marketing, data management and strategies to support entrepreneurs.
  • High competence level in clear and concise verbal and written communication, including an excellent skillset in writing and editing content.
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, and flexible attitude, with ability to work as a team player.
  • Willingness to be flexible and versatile in a changing work environment while maintaining effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Experience working on a bilingual program (coordinating translations, and quality control)
  • The ability to write and speak French is an asset.
  • Perform a wide variety of tasks with little supervision or direction.
  • Independently manage programs performing varied tasks.
  • Decision making and ability to obtain consensus on complex issues.
  • Communicate verbally and in written format with diverse groups.
