Making Food, Sharing Food and Gardening are important pillars of our work to support the health and well-being of our community.  At Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House, the Food and Garden Development Coordinator will work with community to develop, plan, implement and evaluate a vision for food and garden work at Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House.


Neighbourhood Houses play a vital role in the community we serve. We take a grassroots approach to service delivery which allows us to access the strengths and skills of our neighbours and participants and we work together to address Cedar Cottage community needs and goals. We value the empowerment, safety, collaboration, respect and inclusiveness of all people, and we partner with local community organizations to create mutually beneficial events and share resources.


What is some of the work that will be done?   The Food and Garden Development  Coordinator will:

  • Lead community kitchens and cook training programs where people learn skills to cook
  • Engage stakeholders around gardens and growing food to create a comprehensive map of food engagement opportunities in our community-and to begin a collaborative process
  • Bring community together to develop a “food club” where people come together to eat, learn and share food
  • Develop a food purchasing infrastructure with connections to suppliers. There will also be the opportunity to apply for grants to foster the named activities
  • Other Program Activities that foster the engagement of partners, residents and staff around food and garden projects-emphasis will be on projects that bring together people from diverse backgrounds


Skills & Qualifications 

  • Relevant post-secondary diploma or degree with a minimum of 3 years experience developing and delivering community programming for diverse populations- in a Neighbourhood House or similiar type setting.
  • Knowledge of the Kensington-Cedar Cottage community.
  • Knowledge and skills in food safety, healthy cooking and nutrition.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with people experiencing marginalization and poverty.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Demonstrated initiative and independence.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience managing volunteers.
  • Effective organizational, planning and time management skills to manage multiple programs and demands.
  • Ability to work evenings and some weekends.
  • A personal commitment to social justice, good food and health.
  • Creativity, flexibility, adaptability, and a sense of humour are essential.


  • Terms: Regular part time 28 hours a week position starting ASAP.  Possibility for full time hours (35 hours) with a flexible schedule.

    Salary: $26.68 - $29.56 per hour + benefits after successful probationary period of 3 months (Band PC1 of ANHBC’s salary grid) – based on qualifications and experience.
