Director of Miyoskamin
The Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal (NWSM) is seeking a founding Director for
Miyoskamin, an innovative centre and second-stage housing complex that provides
comprehensive health care, social services, and access to justice for Indigenous women,
youth, and families.
Miyoskamin is a Cree word meaning “spring” or “ground-breaking”, which reflects the truly
meaningful impact. La Maison Miyoskamin will take a holistic approach to health and
well-being by pairing affordable housing with the Saralikitaaq Community Social Pediatric
Centre. When doors open in the Springtime of 2023, Miyoskamin will help to ensure that
families remain united and are equipped mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually to
build an autonomous future.
POSITION TITLE: Director
TYPE OF POSITION: Full Time
LOCATION: 757 rue des Seigneurs, Montreal, Qc, H3J 1Y2
SALARY: $80,000 - 100,000/yr (commensurate with experience)
START DATE: Spring 2023
PROBATION: Three (3) month probation period, after which an evaluation
will be conducted.

POSITION TITLE: Director of Miyoskamin
In collaboration with the Miyoskamin steering committee and the Board of Directors of the
NWSM, the Director is responsible for planning, hiring and supervising staff, establishing
partnerships, and overseeing all activities of Miyoskamin and Saralikitaaq throughout the
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Prepare for opening of Miyoskamin
‒ Implement the current business plan and continue developing partnerships and
‒ Develop an operational plan and timeline to guide the opening of Miyoskamin;
‒ Hire and train staff, develop job descriptions, roles and responsibilities.
2. Planning and leadership
‒ Endorse the mission, vision and values of Miyoskamin;
‒ Fundraise and cultivate donor relations in order to ensure the financing;
‒ Promote Miyoskamin and Saralikitaaq to the larger community;
‒ Update and coordinate meetings with the Miyoskamin steering committee;
‒ Update the NWSM Board of Directors concerning overall management;
‒ Develop long-term strategic planning (financing, growth, retention of personnel, etc);
‒ In collaboration with representatives from Saralikitaaq, represent Miyoskamin with
all levels of government and participate in various committees or consultation tables
in the area;
‒ Research best practices for Indigenous second stage housing by engaging with
Indigenous organisations across the country.
3. Operational and administrative management
‒ Oversee the selection committee for new residents;
‒ Manage the AccèsLogis program;
‒ Coordinate regular meetings with staff of both Miyoskamin and Saralikitaaq to
ensure residents are supported in their healing plans;
‒ Maintain relationships with Indigenous community partners;
‒ Ensure accountability to the Board of Directors and its partners/funders;
‒ Create favourable conditions for staff members to evolve in a stimulating and
‒ Develop innovative partnerships with health, education, justice and social service
‒ Ensure effective management of financial, material, residential and human resources;
‒ Generate and carry out an annual fundraising strategy to support the initiative’s
sustainability that builds a diversified funding portfolio;
‒ Respond to crises as needed.
1. Skills and qualities
‒ Possess a deep understanding of systemic issues facing Indigenous people;
‒ Demonstrate strong leadership, interpersonal, innovation and communication skills;
‒ Ability to establish a positive work environment;
‒ Willingness to travel to develop collaborative relationships with Indigenous
organizations across the country.
2. Work experience
‒ At least 2 years experience in a management position in a community, social service
or health setting;
‒ Experience with organizational and/or project development;
‒ Experience in another Indigenous organization (asset).
3. Specialized knowledge
‒ Knowledge of the historical and contemporary realities of urban Indigenous
‒ Understanding of issues of displacement and homelessness that impact Indigenous
‒ Understanding of the diversity of Indigenous communities inside and outside of
‒ Bilingualism in English and French;
‒ Knowledge of an Indigenous language (asset).
– Undergraduate degree in management, administration or the humanities (a
combination of education and management experience may be considered).
