The Organization

Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We are the only service of this kind in Canada. Every year, in collaboration with business partners and community agencies, our teams contribute 70,000 hours annually to support families transitioning to a life free of violence. 


Shelter Movers was founded in 2016 and currently serves families experiencing abuse in Vancouver, Waterloo, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Nova Scotia and Moncton. We are growing and seeking a caring, competent and compassionate senior executive to live our values and lead our team.


The Role

The Chief Operating Officer reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and provides leadership and direct oversight to the organization’s seven current chapters, working with national content experts (Function Directors). This role will also execute a portion of Shelter Movers’ Human Resources strategy. 


Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Chapter Performance Management


  • Provide oversight and direction to Chapter Directors to achieve targets in execution of annual work plans
  • Ensure fidelity to standard operating policies and procedures; 
  • Collaborate with national Function Directors to assess and address gaps or areas for growth;
  • Mentor and enhance leadership capability in Chapter Directors to ensure local functions are operating optimally;
  • Oversee annual budget development and semi-annual budget reforecasting in all chapters;
  • Encourage optimal growth and development of new and existing chapters through benchmarking of processes and procedures, dissemination of best practices and comparative performance analysis  


Human Resources


  • Provide leadership and direct oversight to Shelter Movers’ Human Resources function;
  • In collaboration with a Human Resources Generalist, execute select portions of Shelter Movers’ annual Human Resources work plan, including but not limited to: 
    • Coaching team members on performance management; 
    • Measuring employee morale; 
    • Leading workforce planning; and
    • Assessment and refinement of employee performance management systems. 
  • Maintain employee compensation plans; determining production, productivity, quality, and recommending, planning, and implementing pay structure revisions
  • Support chapter leadership teams by providing human resources advice, counsel, and decisions; analyzing information and applications
  • Champion a culture of policy-based, data-driven decision-making at Shelter Movers
  • Ensure legal compliance with federal, provincial, and local requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, advising management on needed actions, and maintaining records.


Skills and qualifications

  • University degree in Business Management, Human Resources, or Organizational Behavior
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in an organizational leadership role, preferably in the nonprofit sector. 
  • Direct knowledge and experience working in Human Resources
  • University-level French and English oral and written communication skills an asset
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under tight timelines
  • A collaborative and compassionate leadership style to build trust and inspire others to achieve common goals
  • Excellent judgment in setting priorities, problem, and solution identification
  • Experience with system-level strategic visioning and planning 
  • Budget development experience, ability to understand a financial statement
  • Advanced verbal and written negotiation skills
  • The ability to learn new tools quickly and pivot to new trends
  • Understanding and interest in gender studies, including anti-racist, anti-oppressive frameworks and intersectionality of challenges faced by women and particularly survivors of abuse in the local community, an asset
  • Strong ethics and strives for integrity and excellence in all areas of responsibility
  • Strong organizational skills and reliable work habits


Compensation Package

  • Flexible work schedule and hours (35 hours per week), some evenings and weekends as required
  • Remote position or hybrid work environment, depending on your location
  • $75,000 - $90,000 per annum plus competitive benefits
