Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Outward Bound Canada has prioritized the health and well-being of our employees, participants and the wider community. In Sept 2021, OBC ON Wilderness moved from the Huntsville area to their new base, which is located in Minden, ON, at the Kinark Outdoor Centre. This has allowed our services to expand to both expedition and facility-based programs. We are looking forward to continuing connections with youth in nature in 2023. 

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Regional Manager, the Course Logistics Assistant will provide support in and out of the field to the program team to accomplish the safe and effective delivery of programs following the systems and procedures in place at Outward Bound Canada’s bases. The primary responsibilities of the position include assisting in the preparation of the organizing logistical systems (including and not limited to food, equipment, and transportation), Supporting both risk management and program development. The Course Logistics Assistant will also have a close working relationship and mentorship with the Ontario Wilderness Course Directors. If the candidate meets the requirements, the candidate may also be called into the field to add support to an expedition or facility-based program.

WHAT WE OFFER

Positions: 1 seasonal contract
Type: 16 weeks Contract Term (30 – 37.5 hours per week)
Supervisor: Ontario Wilderness Program Manager

OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT

• Assist with OBC logistical systems to support staff out in the field.
• Support the safety, quality, and organization of all logistical systems.
• Assist in the coordination, organization, function, and availability of outdoor supplies.
• Support field staff in packing and preparing all field-going food and equipment.
• Monitor the care and staff utilization of equipment storage and inform the Manager of any concerns, including dispersal, return, and repair of all necessary equipment and supplies needed for expeditions.
• Provide timely assistance in administrative functions such as pre-program documentation, progress reports, external and internal communications, logbooks, vehicle use, receipt management, participant files, and program evaluation and tracking.
• Understand and use program systems and events calendars.
• Be a support to co-workers, volunteers, and stakeholders; assist co-workers with their responsibilities in their absence as required.
• Contribute to a positive and dynamic working culture.
• Participate in meetings and support staff meetings as required.
• Adhere to all OBC policies and guidelines, applicable legislation as they relate to staff and volunteer practices, and all regional and internal Covid-19 protocols.
• Implement staff training and orientations in the areas of equipment care, use, and storage.
• Inform staff of systems and procedures related to gear, equipment, vehicles, and trailers.

REQUIREMENTS

• Follow all relevant protocols detailed in Outward Bound Canada’s current Vaccination Policy
• Clear Vulnerable Sector check
• Standard First Aid & CPR C certification required,
• Working knowledge of outdoor gear and outdoor pursuits
• F-Class (or equivalent) Driver’s License preferred
• Experience with tripping practices and principles.
• Must be willing to maintain a flexible schedule and work weekends and holidays as needed.
• Adaptable, can prioritize while working on numerous projects
• High level of cross-cultural competence, in recognition that Outward Bound Canada works with students and partners from a diversity of communities and backgrounds
• Passionate about the OBC mission, an interest in outdoor pursuits, a desire to help get young people outdoors for transformative experiences and support our instructors in their learning of both technical and interpersonal skills.
• Highly organized and working knowledge of the Google platform and computer skills is an asset.
