This is a newly created position for a Men’s Counsellor, adding to our professional counselling team. The Men’s Counsellor will provide individual and/or group counselling for men who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health challenges. The Men’s Counsellor will assist clients in identifying, understanding, and overcoming emotional issues and the mental health challenges they may be experiencing in their lives.   This position will work closely with our counselling team and our community partners, including the Mental Health & Substance Use team.

 

Duties will include providing regular individual counselling and emotional support to referred male clients, and may include developing and delivering public awareness/information sessions and educational support materials in community. Maintaining positive relationships and working in collaboration with other service providers and our agency team will be essential. It is critical that the candidate be able to demonstrate ethical thinking, and have an understanding of rural communities, respecting the diversity of our North Island communities.

 

Required Qualifications:

A degree in Counselling or related field, and/or an appropriate combination of education and training.  Should have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of trauma informed practice, and counselling modalities suitable to address mild to moderate mental health issues in men. Preferred background should also include direct counselling experience with clients experiencing current or historical trauma.  Other assets include a demonstrated ability to manage a caseload, knowledge of Indigenous culture; and experience working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.

 

A valid driver’s license and own vehicle, as well as a successful completion of a criminal record check are required.  Winter tires are required for travel between October 1 – March 31. As this position is funded through Island Health, the successful candidate will be required to show proof of full Covid-19 vaccination.
