About the Role

CASA Mental Health is an established non-profit organization delivering holistic, culturally safe wrap-around mental health services to Albertans and their families. CASA provides mental health service to the missing middle – mental health treatment for diagnosed children and youth, in between prevention and promotion in primary and community care, and acute treatment in hospital.

 

CASA’s team of mental health professionals are trauma experts committed to delivering service in collaboration with community partners. This includes assessment and treatment for up to 4,000 children, youth and their families each year, from community outreach settings to intensive treatment programs.

 

The Trauma Team actively practices community care through check-ins, sharing meals together and leaning on each other for help, guidance and debriefing tough cases. The team is committed to continued learning and upskilling. Management is supportive in funding formal training for the team.

 

Job Description

The Trauma Team is currently looking for a Mental Health Nurse to support the children, youth and families that we serve. Reporting to the Clinical Manager and working with the Nursing Professional Practice Lead, the Mental Health Nurse will work collaboratively with our team of physicians, mental health therapists, concurrent care specialists and therapy systems navigators to provide timely and appropriate mental health service delivery.

 

The Mental health Nurse will provide support with medication reconciliation, assessments, medication teaching and management, follow-up phone calls, crisis management, health promotion and disease prevention, documentation, participation in program and clinical meetings, assisting with group therapy as deemed appropriate, and collaboration with pharmacies and other community services. The Mental Health Nurse practices according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific nursing college.

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Completes appropriate nursing assessments (physical and psychosocial) and utilizes nursing process to identify mental health concerns and current risk.

  • Incorporates objective findings such as laboratory, diagnostic findings, specialist reports and past history;

    • medication reconciliation;

    • monitoring of physiological parameters;

    • medication side effects;

    • suicide risk assessment.

  • Integrates assessment and other data to establish appropriate long and short-term goals and provide nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health.

  • Monitors, evaluates and modifies nursing care plan based on effectiveness of interventions and/or changes in condition or environment, in collaboration with the patient and care team.

  • Provides information and instructions to assist in understanding the clinical condition and ongoing care and management.

  • May assist/co-facilitate individual or group therapy.

  • Accurately document findings in the electronic health record.

  • Liaises with other professionals to promote continuity of care and assists families with connecting to a primary care physician.

  • Provides nursing support to a number of concurrently operating teams and programs in a variety of settings and across multiple sites.

  • Identifies service delivery improvements and suggests enhancements with the lens of evidence-informed practice and CASA strategic and operational plans.

Days Off: Saturday/Sunday

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse.

  • Three to five years of recent pediatric mental health experience.

  • Must be a member in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta or the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.

  • Knowledge of family therapy and group therapy would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.

  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.

  • Ability prioritize work activities and work autonomously, and as part of an inter-disciplinary team.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new or unexpected situations, flexibility in approach to interpersonal situations.

  • Current and clear Vulnerable Sector, Child Intervention Check and Criminal Records Check is required.

  • Current First Aid and BLS- HCP.

  • Mental Health First Aid or ASSIST.

  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

  • Must be able to provide physical restraints as per TCI procedures.
