Hours per week: 31 hours per week

Reports to: Childcare Coordinator

Rate of Pay: $19.82 per hour

The Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) helps immigrants and refugees meet their social, cultural, and economic goals. Comprised of dedicated staff and volunteers, ICA provides language instruction, support finding housing and employment and a range of other services. In addition, ICA is actively engaged in the community to strengthen connections between immigrants and those born in Canada. Through our work, we are building a strong, diverse, and vibrant community. ICA is a welcoming, passionate, and energetic organization that has been having a positive impact in the Greater Victoria region for 50 years.

Job description: Provides on-site care in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for children from 6 months to 5 years of participants in ICA’s various settlement and integration programs, including language training; employment; information and orientation. Serves all individuals, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA2+, and those with diverse abilities. Reports to the Childcare Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • Early Childhood Education (ECE) certificate, or combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Current Emergency Childcare First Aid and CPR required.
  • Letter from medical doctor, attesting to good physical and mental health, is required; and some lifting of children and objects required.
  • Minimum two years demonstrated successful experience in a childcare setting
  • Experience working with persons from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds is preferred.
  • Experience working with immigrant and refugee children preferred and understanding of immigration and refugee issues.
  • Proficiency in a settlement and/or resettlement language preferred.
  • Indigenous cultural competencies and/or lived experience with Indigenous communities welcomed.
  • Employment requires proof vaccination status (minimum of two doses).
  • As a condition of hire, a current, clear criminal record check, including vulnerable populations check, and proof of WHMIS training are required.

Key duties/responsibilities

  • Plans and implements a daily program of developmentally appropriate activities for children.
  • Organizes space and equipment and prepares program materials prior to activities; contributes to cleaning-up after program.
  • Attends to children’s physical needs for diapering, toileting, eating, and sleeping.
  • Records and addresses special requirements and needs in a daily log.
  • Follows established procedures for implementing and monitoring safety and hygiene practices for all children.
  • Create awareness of anti-oppressive/social justice issues.
  • Participates in childminding-related training opportunities to stay current on issues impacting ICA’s clients and their children.
  • Participates in regular team and organization-wide staff meetings.
  • Follows all ICA policies and administrative procedures.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
