Manager, Communications


Reports to:  Director, Marketing and Communications

Supervises:  N/A


Job Summary


As a member of the Marketing team the Manager, Communications is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating communications, media and public relations plans in support of strategic and operating goals of the Alzheimer Society of Canada.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Develop integrated communications strategies and standards in collaboration with internal teams and federation partners
  • Collaborate with ASC teams to deliver measurable impact and growth in communications with targeted audiences in support of strategic and annual plans related to brand, marketing, programs, research, fundraising and government relations
  • Oversees the development of communications vehicles which may include the annual report, newsletters, web content etc.
  • Identify strategic short-term and long-term opportunities across all communications channels (online and offline) to enhance and support society objectives and brand
  • Provides input to federation communications and counsel and support to federation societies
  • Prepares statements for internal and for external audiences on key issues surrounding the disease and the work of the Society
  • Develops and maintains issues and crisis management materials; Identifies contentious or sensitive issues and proactively develops messaging, position statements and or/strategy




Media and Public Relations

  • Develops media strategies and proactively seeks media opportunities at the national and international level
  • Supports federation with key messaging and media relations tools for local media engagement
  • Develop and implement national media campaigns in collaboration with counterparts in provincial societies
  • Responds to all general media inquires and delegates this role as necessary depending on the nature of the inquiry
  • Works collaboratively with internal partners to identify and maintain relationships with media spokespeople, including ASC staff, caregivers, people living with dementia, scientific, medical and advocacy experts
  • Trains/coaches senior leaders, staff, and spokespeople for media interviews to ensure consistent corporate messaging and brand
  • Cultivates and maintains a strong network of national media contacts
  • Recommends response to news items/issues including coordinating written statement/letters to the editor etc.
  • Ensures appropriate news stories, statements are shared with provincial Alzheimer Societies


Job Qualifications



  • Post-secondary education (degree/diploma) in Public Relations, Media Relations, Corporate Communications, or Journalism
  • An equivalent combination of experience, education and training will also be considered



  • Minimum five (5) years professional experience in Corporate Communications, Media Relations, Marketing, or related field across online and offline media
  • Experience working within complex organizations with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong record in project execution
  • Experience working in a highly matrixed organization


Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Certifications:

  • Excellent relationship building and stewardship skills
  • Ability to work remotely with a diverse team, and multiple stakeholder groups nationwide
  • Excellent service-oriented problem-solving skills, with high personal standard for service delivery
  • Excellent software skills and proficiency Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of standards and best practices related to areas of responsibility
  • Ability to support and enhance long term relationships with prospects, donors and senior level


  • Ability to think and plan strategically in supporting new projects or enhancing existing initiatives
  • Ability to communicate proficiently in French is an asset
  • Knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and related diseases is an asset
