Location:            Hybrid work environment with “remote first” orientation.  We welcome candidates that do or will live anywhere in Alberta but prefer the Marketing and Communications Specialist to reside in the Edmonton area, as our office is in the downtown core.

About the role:

The Marketing & Communications Specialist leads the creation and implementation of marketing and communications initiatives, strategies, and programs/services, including overall organizational messaging and editorial calendar.  Reporting to the Engagement and Relationships Manager, the Marketing & Communications Specialist also supports the organization’s proposal and reporting processes; provides copywriting, copy editing and proofreading when required; ensures brand cohesion and works to create and implement an integrated “voice” for the organization.

What you would do:

  • Effectively manage and create content for marketing and communications efforts in a consistent and responsive manner
  • Lead VA’s digital presence, media relations, creation of the Annual Report and VA Newsletter, Membership communications, and National Volunteer Week activities
  • Lead and implement VA’s social media and online content plan. Maintain VA’s online presence through blogs, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms
  • Create content and graphic design using Adobe Creative Suite or Canva
  • Chair Editorial Meetings
  • Attend special events and activities to take photos and/or videos for communication materials
  • Nourish “VA’s voice” in a way to create a sense of belonging and connection through all our marketing and communications materials
  • Review annually and support updates for the Crisis Communications Plan
  • Create, disseminate, interpret surveys, and research projects with the support from colleagues
  • Take initiative and seek out opportunities for creating and capturing comments of engagement and connection with the people, organizations, and communities we serve
  • Be intentional to reserve time in calendar for relationship building, (un)learning, and professional development
  • Lead team workshops and learning opportunities on good and/or emerging practices for internal and external communication practices and trends as needed
  • Support other Volunteer Alberta programs and initiatives as required
  • Supervise Marketing & Communications interns, volunteers or summer students as required

Who you are:

  • Have completed a Post-Secondary degree or diploma in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or another related field. Demonstrated experience and expertise without a degree or diploma will also be considered.
  • Have a minimum of two years' experience in marketing or communications planning and strategy, media relations, and social media management
  • Skilled with digital communications technology, including WordPress, MS Office Suite, content management, Google Analytics, and social media platforms, and aware of trends in the field
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal and public relations skills, and relationships-focused
  • Take on leadership roles in special projects and proactively seek out opportunities for success
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, with a strong attention to follow through and follow up
  • Work from a place of emotional intelligence, compassion, and curiosity; coupled with self-motivation, creative problem solving, and ability to bring about positive change
  • Perform individual responsibilities with minimal supervision, and to work as part of a team towards common, coordinated responsibilities and objectives
  • Have a high degree of accuracy and the ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
  • Resident of Alberta, or have a willingness to relocate to the province
