We are currently seeking the ideal candidate to fill the position of: Farm Park Coordinator

We are an 8-acre farm in the heart of the Jane and Finch neighbourhood in Toronto. We are a not-for-profit organization and leader in Toronto’s dynamic urban agriculture and community food sector. At Black Creek Community Farm, we serve and enrich our community through a thriving farm, healthy food, and hands-on training and learning experiences. Our focus is to inspire the next generation by providing leadership in food justice and supporting diverse and social ecosystems.

Scope of Work:

The BCCF Farm Park Coordinator will coordinate programming and activities that engage community members and volunteers in the project of Farm Park stewardship and maintenance. This includes developing and coordinating the implementation of education, training, workshops, volunteer sessions and events related to the maintenance of the program gardens, food forest, trail system, chicken coop, and other natural growing spaces(outside of the market garden). The Farm Park Coordinator will develop new programs, supervise Farm Park staff, placement students and volunteers and engage them in hands-on stewardship of the Farm Park spaces.

Duties include (but are not limited to):

Programming

  • Design, plan, and deliver programming that engages the local residents, community gardeners, and visiting groups to learn about and steward the physical natural spaces of Farm Park
  • Develop, coordinate, and facilitate workshops, volunteer activities, and events in person, online or off site including planning, staffing and materials

Supervision

  • Train, schedule and supervise staff (including Farm Park Facilitator and Farm Park Assistants), as well as placement students and volunteers in all relevant aspects of site projects

Site Maintenance

  • Lead the establishment and maintenance of the food forest, trails, wiigwum, and gardens (including 3 sisters, medicine wheel, children’s, youth, seniors’, and pollinator gardens), the outdoor oven, and community plots
  • Develop management systems and delegate Farm Park plant care, site cleanliness and repair tasks and responsibilities among all Farm Park team members (Coordinator, Facilitator, Assistants, placement students, and volunteers
  • Create seasonal, weekly, and daily “to do” task lists for the Farm Park team to accomplish

Administration

  • With the Programs Manager, develop a seasonal work plan, community outreach and communications strategy, and community workshops, volunteer and events schedule
  • Coordinate community plots and assist members with related administrative tasks such as receiving payment, communication, conflict management, and troubleshooting
  • Purchase program materials and supplies, track expenses and receipts, and support project bookkeeping
  • Develop and oversee implementation of tool care and inventory
  • Work with BCCF Program Manager to establish project budgets, and track and adjust income and expenses
  • Coordinate community plots and assist members with related administrative tasks such as receiving payment, communication, conflict management, and troubleshooting

Evaluation and Reporting

  • Design and oversee the implementation of program evaluations tools
  • Collaborate with Farm Park staff to prepare monthly program updates, the annual report, and other funding-related progress reports

Outreach

  • Design and conduct outreach activities to register participants, including creating promotional material, canvassing, flyering, partnering with local schools and community organizations, and tabling at community events to engage community residents
  • Provide content and media for communication to be shared on our upcoming Farm Park event and programs, weekly social media posts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin) and monthly e-newsletters, update website as needed

General

  • Adhere to Foodshare and BCCF’s policies and health and safety procedures
  • Attend BCCF staff meetings and staff trainings, schedule team meetings and check-ins
  • Participate in farm-wide initiatives and events
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum two years experience in agriculture, permaculture, native plants, pollinator gardens, agroecology, horticulture or a related field
  • At least 1 year of horticultural experience with knowledge of organic growing practices such as pest management, fertility and weed management, and seed starting
  • At least 2 years experience supervising staff, volunteers, and/or interns
  • Interest in community-led food projects and/or neighbourhood-based community organizing
  • Interest in working outdoors and experience working with plants
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of food justice and our mission, vision, and policies.
  • At least 1 year experience working with people of different ages, genders, abilities, and cultural backgrounds
  • Great people skills (good at delegating tasks, helping people feel valued, energizing groups, keeping people happy when it’s 30 degrees or about to rain, etc.)
  • At least 1 year experience facilitating group learning and experiential learning in small and large groups
  • At least 1 year experience conducting outreach in community (registering participants, creating promotional materials, canvassing, flyering, tabling at community events)
  • Effective communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • An understanding of issues affecting the diverse populations of Jane-Finch area including general issues affecting low-income communities
  • Experience living and/or working in racialized communities
  • Competency using a walk-behind or other tractor, tractor and implements, or willingness to learn
  • Digital literacy and familiarity with tools such as G-Suite (Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Slides, Calendar, Gmail), social media, Canva, Buffer, Slack)
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • A valid Ontario Drivers License is an asset

Job Requirements:

  • Repetitive tasks such as bending, crouching, reaching, and lifting up to 50lbs
  • Full shifts standing and working on your feet
  • Use of hand tools and mechanized equipment
  • Working outdoors in all kinds of weather (heat, sun, rain, cold)
  • Working some evenings and weekends as well as occasional holidays
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary: $49,000/year (37.5hrs/week)*

Benefits: Four weeks of paid vacation, 1-2 week paid winter shutdown, 10 paid personal leave, 20 paid Wellness/Sick Days, 1 paid birthday leave day, all per calendar year; extended health benefits with no waiting period*

Contract Type: Full-time, Indefinite

Reports to: Programs Manager

Location: This position's main work location is Black Creek Community Farm, 4929 Jane St, with the ability to work from home with the Program Manager’s prior approval

Selection Process:

  3. The hiring committee will conduct first round interviews with selected candidates. Candidates will be sent the interview questions 48 hours in advance of their scheduled interview. Candidates are welcome, but not expected or required, to send any questions they have for the hiring committee in advance of the interview. These usually occur about 4 weeks after the application deadline.

In recognition of the time and labour of preparing for and attending an interview, BCCF financially compensates interviewees at a fixed rate of $75 per interview.

  1. An additional task (such as preparing a sample workshop outline) and/or interview may be included if deemed necessary by the hiring committee.
  2. HR will conduct reference checks for the candidate they intend to extend an offer to. This process usually takes about 1 week.
  3. HR will send the selected candidate an Employment Agreement, which the candidate will have time to review and return.
