About Us:

Kate Booth House is a short-term, confidentially located transition house providing safe shelter for up to 25 women and children at risk of violence. Residential services and a crisis line are offered 24 hours a day throughout the year, to give support and advocacy to help women and children regain their self-esteem and rebuild their lives.

We provide food, shelter, clothing, personal care items, children’s toys, and all the necessities to bring comfort to victims of violence.  We offer weekday children’s programs, school tutoring, child care, women’s individual and group support, and spiritual care.

The Role:

The role of Residential Support Worker offers the opportunity for very meaningful work! The successful applicant will provide support and assistance to our residents, maintaining a safe and welcoming space for those in crisis situations. As the Residential Support Worker you will be part of a team that works together to make a tangible difference in the lives of our residents.

Hours: 

  • Monday - Friday 3:30pm-12:00am (40 hrs a week)

Key Responsibilities:

  • As part of a team, provide regularly scheduled shift coverage, supporting the smooth functioning of KBH throughout the shift
  • Participate in shift change, communicating necessary information clearly and concisely  
  • Answer our 24 hours crisis line, telephone screening and intakes while on shift
  • Gives house orientation to new clients
  • Record relevant shift information in appropriate logs and other necessary forms and reports
  • Facilitate Evening Programs
  • Assist with food preparation for meals
  • Provide crisis intervention if abuser locates KBH
  • Mediate conflict/violence within the house if it occurs
  • Perform security checks at the beginning and towards the end of shift
  • Be familiar with the KBH policies and procedures 
  • Ensure the house is tidy and clean
  • Drive a resident to the hospital, or an appointment or when required
  • Responsible to provide activities for the children when appropriate

Qualifications:

*NOTE: For some jobs, you may be required to provide validated educational documentation.

  • A certificate, diploma, or degree in social services, or equivalent training in a related field
  • Valid First Aid/CPR level C certificate
  • FOODSAFE Level 1 certificate

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years working with victims of domestic violence
  • Experience with frontline work in a social service setting
  • Experience in assisting professionals to intervene safely in domestic violence situations

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Understanding of trauma informed care and the situation of women (and their children) who have experienced violence in their intimate relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication as well as training skills; ability to share information appropriately with various stakeholders
  • Comfort in collaborating with different agencies (e.g. Multicultural), ministry (e.g. MHSD), and lawyers
  • Must be comfortable in using computers and database programs
  • Valid BC driver’s license (driver’s abstract required)
  • Criminal Record Check for working with children and/or vulnerable adults
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training 
  • Demonstrated skills in conflict resolution
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people (Kate Booth House serves all women and children who are victims of abuse regardless of race, colour, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, or age)

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
