From stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas to protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, our victories represent new hope for the world's oceans.

We are seeking a Seafood Traceability Campaigner, who is preferably bilingual in French and English, to work in our Ottawa office from Tuesday – Thursday with an option to work in a home office Monday and Friday. The Campaigner will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop, execute and win Oceana Canada’s campaign to require all seafood sold in Canada to be traceable from boat to plate. This position requires strong persuasion and communications skills, problem-solving and project management skills. The ideal candidate is action- and detail-oriented, with experience working collaboratively to advance policy. The Campaigner will report to the Campaign Director, based in Ottawa.

Principal duties and responsibilities

• Work with a multidisciplinary team consisting of scientists, researchers, advocates, communications professionals, lawyers and others to achieve ambitious annual and longer-term campaign goals
• Implement advocacy, communications, and outreach strategies and tactics to achieve the goals of the campaign, establishing Oceana Canada’s leadership on seafood fraud and traceability in Canada
• Build relationships with government officials and decision-makers, stakeholders, corporations, institutions and grassroots supporters in order to advance policy change
• Conduct research, consult with key influencers and write campaign reports, messaging, government briefs and other materials
• Lead planning and execution of the campaign strategy and tactics
• Organize community-level campaign events when required
• Manage relationships with external partners, vendors and decision-makers
• Act as the media spokesperson for the campaign
• Maintain a working knowledge of related science and policy practices and decisions
• Manage and track campaign-related expenses
• Coordinate all campaign timelines, milestones and deliverables using appropriate project management methods
• Regularly report on campaign progress and ensure goals and objectives are met
• Other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to achieve campaign objectives.

Requirements

• University degree in environmental policy, political science or related degree or comparable work experience
• At least five years of demonstrated success in managing and executing campaigns or projects related to government policy
• Exceptional project management skills and ability to work effectively with team members located in different cities
• Experience completing projects under tight deadlines, effectively managing a demanding workload
• Demonstrated understanding of federal policy creation
• Strong writing skills and experience developing blog posts, policy briefs and other written materials
• Highly effective negotiation, problem identification and resolutions skills
• Superb meeting facilitation skills
• Able to effectively communicate with technical, professional and senior staff
• Able to build and maintain lasting relationships with stakeholders
• Experience working with the federal government is an asset
• Experience as a media spokesperson an asset
• Some travel is required
• Bilingual (English/French) both written and spoken (preferred).
