About CASA

CASA Mental Health is an established non-profit organization delivering holistic, culturally-safe wrap-around mental health services to Albertans and their families. CASA provides mental health service to the missing middle – mental health treatment for diagnosed children and youth, in between prevention and promotion in primary and community care, and acute treatment in hospital.

 

CASA’s team of mental health professionals are trauma experts committed to delivering service in collaboration with community partners. This includes assessment and treatment for up to 4,000 children, youth and their families each year, from community outreach settings to intensive treatment programs.

About the Role

CASA House is a voluntary tertiary care residential program for youth in grades seven to 12, operating seven days a week. CASA House employs a multi-disciplinary team that works closely with the youth from a bio-psycho-social treatment approach, and utilizes a trauma-informed approach in all areas of programming. Adolescents who come to CASA House have complex needs, including severe mental health challenges, family dysfunction, school issues, peer related issues and social/economic challenges.

Reporting to the Manager and working with the Professional Practice Lead - Nursing, the Licensed Practical Nurse works collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to provide and coordinate services for children, youth and families receiving mental health services within CASA’s programs and services. 

The Licensed Practical Nurse will:

  • Provide nursing assessments and care plans for patients, including medication administration and monitoring, teaching, telephone follow-up and health promotion.
  • Practice according to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific professional college.
  • Assist with individual or group therapy as directed and as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with other professionals to promote continuity of care, and assist families with connecting to a primary care physician.
  • Identify service delivery improvements and suggest enhancements, utilizing a lens of evidence-informed practice and with consideration to CASA’s strategic and operational plan.
  • Maintain patient electronic health records in a complete and timely way.
  • Work collaboratively with the research department to assist with critical appraisal, evaluation and knowledge transfer.
  • Contribute to program and clinical team meetings.
  • Participate in planning and implementation.

Minimum hourly rate: $29.31

Maximum hourly rate: $36.46

Hours per shift: Nine-hour night shifts (2200 to 0730)

Shifts per week: Four
Days off: Per rotation

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a practical nurse program recognized by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, or recognized by CASA.
  • Current registration and in good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
  • A minimum of three years of recent experience in pediatrics and mental health is required.
  • Preferred experience in crisis intervention and de-escalation.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Act in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.
  • Ability to work autonomously, independently and to prioritize work activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new or changing situations.
  • Flexibility and skill with interpersonal situations.

Conditions of Employment

  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • A satisfactory Child Intervention Check.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or exemption on the basis of a protected legal ground.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA), as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.
