About the Role
The Mental Health Therapist works with children and their families to set goals and to develop skills that promote growth. The children in the Children’s Day Program (CDP) are in grades three to six and experiencing severe challenges managing or regulating their emotions and behavior. The therapist provides individual, family, and group therapy along with school liaison and clinical support. The program is delivered in partnership with Edmonton Public Schools.

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Mental Health Therapist works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure success in the area of clinical service delivery. The Mental Health Therapist provides timely mental health assessment and treatment to children. They adhere to the code of ethics and practice standards of their specific discipline, and apply the principles of evidence-informed practice to all aspects of this work. The Mental Health Therapist nurtures collaborative relationships with community partners.

The Mental Health Therapist will:

  • Conduct comprehensive bio-psycho-social mental health assessments for assigned children.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans using a variety of treatment approaches.
  • Formulate a diagnosis, when applicable, using the DSM V and/or other diagnostic tools as appropriate.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to support the client in achieving therapeutic goals utilizing a variety of developmentally appropriate treatment approaches including family therapy, individual therapy, and group therapy.
  • Facilitate psycho-educational and/or therapeutic groups for children and parents.
  • Carry out case management functions including: convening case conferences, liaising with community services and other professionals involved with the child and family (especially education, social services, justice and health).
  • Participate in the intake and discharge processes. 
  • Complete written discharge summaries.
  • Contribute to staff knowledge and understanding of discipline-specific issues. 
  • Advocate on behalf of the child and family as appropriate.

Days Off: Saturday and Sunday

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in psychology, social work (with psycho-social intervention designation), occupational therapy or nursing. 
  • A minimum of 2 years clinical practice in child and family mental health and/or youth addictions; experience in schools or the education system is preferred.
  • Must be a member in good standing with their respective professional association/college.
  • Demonstrated ability to practice culturally safe therapeutic interventions.
  • Excellent assessment and treatment skills.
  • Excellent case management skills.
  • Strong grasp of the principles of evidence-based practice.
  • Knowledge and experience supporting the healing of children and youth who have experienced trauma.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following therapeutic modalities: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Crisis Intervention, Narrative Therapy, and Emotion Focused Therapy.
  • Training and clinical experience with the following therapeutic approaches will be an asset: play therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, exposure therapy, habit reversal training, motivational interviewing, organizational skills training, parent management training, positive behavioural supports.
  • Experience supporting the mental health of children and youth who identify as LGBTQ2S+.
  • Training and/or experience in facilitating group therapy would be an asset.
  • Ability to work autonomously, independently and to prioritize work activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new or changing situations.
