OVERVIEW
Long Point Basin Land Trust (LPBLT) is a charitable non-government organization with a mission to protect the rich biodiversity and habitats of the Long Point Basin area. LPBLT promotes conservation through land securement, outreach, research, habitat restoration and species at risk recovery. By  engaging and retaining the support of the regional and broader community, we ensure that these lands will be protected for future generations.


We are currently recruiting a Program Assistant to support our Outreach and Land Stewardship activities. This is a temporary, full-time 16-week position beginning in May 2023 (pending funding decision).


This role is ideal for individuals interested in developing skills in the conservation sector or non-profit sector by focusing on non-profit communications, volunteer management, and ecosystem restoration.


LOCATION
The main workplace of the Program Assistant will be the office in Port Rowan, Ontario with regular travel throughout Norfolk County to visit our 13 nature reserves as well as attend community events, plus regular work-from-home.

 

TERM AND SALARY
This position is compensated at $17.50 per hour for a regular workweek of 37.5 hours for 16 weeks from May through August, 2023, plus mandatory government benefits. Evenings and weekends will occasionally be required to attend public and community events hosted by the organization. This position is pending funding decision.


KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION
● Supporting ecosystem health by conducting species surveys, invasive species removal, and monitoring restoration activities/progress on nature reserves.
● Utilize small hand tools and field equipment (such as hand saws, brush saws, and mowers) to assist with invasive and non-native species control as well as the installation or maintenance of infrastructure including wildlife structures, signage, and trails on LPBLT nature reserves.


OUTREACH
● Represent the organization at outreach booths in the community, collaborate with other staff to plan and deliver public and volunteer events, interact in a professional manner with constituents, volunteers and donors, and respond to inquiries via phone and email. 
● Collaborate with staff to coordinate volunteer events, assist with delivering volunteer training, and coordinate community conservation events.

COMMUNICATIONS
● Composition of newsletter and website articles, event invitations, and volunteer management communications.
● Engage with the public and volunteers (verbal and written) to ensure the successful delivery of LPBLT's Property Stewardship, Citizen Science, and Ecosystem Restoration volunteer programs.


DIGITAL TOOLS
● Social media content creation and scheduling, creation of graphics, application of e-newsletter tools, and creation of online event registration forms and pages.
● Photography and inventory of properties and species.

 


DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
● Enrolled in or completed some post-secondary education, or equivalent experience in the field of conservation, biology, environmental sciences, ecology, ecosystem restoration, forestry, wildlife management, communications or marketing
● Strong computer skills including social media, word processing and spreadsheets
● Solid communications skills as required to effectively, positively and professionally communicate with donors, supporters, volunteers and the general public in numerous settings
● Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff and volunteers
● Not-for-profit experience is an asset
● Solid organizational skills including planning, time management, and task facilitation
● First Aid / CPR is an asset
● Valid G2 License and regular access to a reliable vehicle is required.


Candidate must be between the ages of 15 - 30 at the start of employment.
