Job Summary:

Under the direction of the of the Manager, the Advocate is responsible for the provision of formal advocacy services to members with mental illness in order to facilitate the acquisition of benefits and other societal resources. Represents clients as a formal advocate in settings such as the justice system, hospitals, the community and at administrative hearings by performing duties such as speaking on their behalf at meetings and hearings. Supports and assists clients with resolving problems by researching and interpreting relevant legislation and policies and preparing documents including reconsideration, tribunal and dispute resolution submissions.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Ability to work with people with a mental illness
• Ability to communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, government agencies and other service providers
• Ability to create effective and well-reasoned written submissions. Working knowledge of provincial legislation related to income assistance, child and family law, and the Ministry of Child and Family Development
• Strong communication and mediation skills
• Ability to organize and prioritize
• Knowledge of advocacy issues and community resources
• Strong organizational skills
• Conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills

Qualifications:

• Diploma in Community Social Service – Mental Health-related
• Two years’ experience in a mental health setting including front line advocacy work in the areas of mental health, child and family law, income assistance and/or housing. Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Additional Requirements:

• Valid Occupational First Aid Level One (OFA1) Certificate, or equivalent
• WHMIS
• First Aid for Mental Health
• Naloxone Training
• Upon conditional hire, must receive an approved Criminal Record Check with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General for working with children and vulnerable adults, and must maintain good-standing

As per the PHO, you must have received both doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine in order to work at our organization. An approved COVID-19 vaccine passport must be presented at the time of hire.
