The Manager, Programs and Education will be an individual who is passionate about the work of Historica Canada, has experience managing a team to achieve deliverables in a timely fashion, has supervised budgets, and is enthusiastic about celebrating and promoting the stories of Canada’s cultural and linguistic diversity. The successful candidate is bilingual, organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and a strong communicator.
Reporting to the Director, Branding and Development, the key responsibilities of the Manager, Programs and Education include:
Program Management (Memory Project, Citizenship Challenge, Canada History Week, Chinese-Canadian Veterans Video, and other educational programs): oversees workflow, monitors program goals and deliverables, programming, and budgets; manages creation of educational materials including video content, education guides, quizzes, podcasts and more; reviews and edits all program content in both official languages;
Manages the staff (generally 6-8 employees) of the Memory Project, Citizenship Challenge, Canada History Week, and Chinese-Canadian Veterans Video Project; holds weekly check-in meetings with staff and for programs; supervises budgets and consultant relationships;
Oversees the creation of education guides; edits, reviews, and signs off on education guides and materials in both official languages; oversees educational outreach efforts to educational organizations, teaching associations, school boards, museums and other similar organizations; oversees program participation in educational conferences; leads on any teacher surveys;
Oversees program reporting and funding renewals;
With the Communications Team, develops the messaging for launches and outreach, drafts weekly report for senior management, oversees permissions requests for programs under their purview;
Supports the Director, Branding and Development, and the Vice President, Operations as required;
Other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications:
University or college degree in related field;
2-3 years of experience as a Manager;
Bilingualism (English and French) is required;
Experience in program management;
Strong budgeting skills (P & L, forecasting, tracking, and management);
Experience in the education sector an asset;
Copy editing and fact checking experience an asset (ideally in both languages);
Excellent attention to detail in all aspects of work;
Team player and strong individual worker;
Ability to build and maintain strong relationships in a hybrid/remote environment;
Strong self-management skills, including time management and task prioritization, with the ability to proactively identify and problem solve to plan ahead within areas of responsibility (e.g., competing priorities, deadlines, standards of quality).
Flexibility and adaptability to change;
Interest in and natural capacity for interacting with team members and external stakeholders, building trust, rapport, and collaborative communication;
Strong information synthesis and communication skills; ability to supervise messaging tailored to diverse stakeholder groups;
Interest in and knowledge of Canadian history and culture.

Based on the results of the questionnaire, Historica Canada expects to invite 3-5 candidates to an initial interview via video call (approx. 1 hour). This interview will usually be with 2 Historica Canada staff. Some roles may require a short skills test, which would be provided following the interview.
Up to 2 candidates may be moved forward to a second interview with the President and Vice President of Operations and will later be asked to provide references.

This is a contract position covering a maternity leave, beginning April 10, 2023, and ending June 14, 2024. The annual salary will be $70,000 to $80,000, prorated to length of contract, less applicable statutory deductions, which will be paid to you twice a month.

This position is based at Historica Canada’s Head Office in Toronto. Please note: In accordance with Historica Canada’s Remote Work Policy, staff may choose to work from the office, or continue to work remotely. Managers are required to work in office at least one day per week.
When Covid-19 public health guidelines allow for it, this position may require travel (air and ground) within Canada and subject to government safety protocols.
