EHS is a safe haven for thousands of homeless animals each year, providing veterinary treatment, behavioral rehabilitation, care, enrichment and rehoming. Beyond animal sheltering, we engage with the community through various programs and services to support happy, lifelong bonds between people and pets.

The Role

The Animal Health Summer Student will contribute to departmental organization by assisting with administrative related duties. They will contribute to shelter animal wellbeing by assisting the medical team members with animal restraint, handling, VMA surgery duties, and other duties as described. This position will ensure the medical department maintains a high level of care, organization, and humane treatment of all animals.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for a variety of functions as follows:

 

General Shelter Tasks (assisting VMA, RVT and Vets)

  • Assist medical team members with treatment report tasks. (Animal restraint, weight checks, grooming, socialization, etc.)
  • Assist with incoming exams and movement of animals to their kennel.
  • General cleaning and tidying of all medical areas in the shelter.
  • Adhere to OHS and EHS policies and procedures, including following disease management protocols and wearing required PPE.

Surgery Assistance

  • Assist in surgery prep with animal restraint during premedication and induction, movement of animals to and from surgery suites and kennels.
  • Maintain and clean all surgical areas/rooms and kennels including surgical pack wrapping and gown/drape hygiene.
  • On-board Mobile Unit assistance as needed (season permitting)

Education and Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Currently pursuing a career in an animal health or related field
  • Experience with animals in the area of medical practices and procedures is an asset
  • Experience with identifying common animal behaviours
  • Experience working with computer software

 

Skills and Abilities

As the ideal candidate, you will have a passion for people, performance and diversity (within lens of  animal welfare. You have excellent communications skills (both verbal and written), ability to work independently and in fast paced environment.

You are comfortable dealing with animals of all species and temperaments.

Compensation/Hours

Compensation: $15.00 an hour.

Hours: 40 hours a week.
