THE OPPORTUNITY:

Partnering with the CEO and as a member of the senior leadership team, the Chief Finance and Administration Officer (CFAO) actively takes part in the strategic planning and management of the organization with a focus on financial sustainability and growth and plays a critical leadership role in developing and implementing the SCHC financial strategy. The CFAO is responsible for overseeing fiscal and fiduciary duties, human resources, facilities, property management, and for providing policy recommendations to the CEO and the Board of Directors. The CFAO provides strategic oversight and acts as a resource for financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, accounting, and risk management; oversees implementation of human resources (HR) policies and programs, including recruitment, employee/labour relations, compensation, and employee development, as well as oversees facilities, contract management, and general office management. Strong administration and finance skills, advanced judgement, collaborative relationships, and a passion for people and SCHC’s mission are essential as well as alignment on values including inclusivity, innovation, collaboration, accessibility, respect, and equity.

 

THE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Team Leadership

  • Establishes finance team goals and objectives, developing short- and long-term plans while monitoring and evaluating the progress in achieving these plans
  • Leads the Finance and HR teams (9 persons) through engagement, coaching, training, and performance management to ensure a strong, effective, and efficient multi-disciplinary team
  • As a key member of the senior team, participates in problem-solving, brainstorming and bringing forward solutions to a range of issues both at an operational and strategic level
  • Identifies financial and administrative issues and provides recommendations for action
  • Collaborates and manages relationships with external contractors and suppliers
  • Promotes open and timely communication between Corporate Services and all areas of SCHC

Finance & Accounting

  • Provides strategic planning, oversight, direction, and implementation of the annual budgeting process
  • Leads the monthly financial forecast, reporting and analysis, including insights and recommendations on revenue growth and operational efficiencies to the CEO and Finance, Audit and Risk Committee of the Board
  • Works with program leaders to develop financial plans and forecasts for operations, ensuring alignment with SCHC goals and objectives
  • Responsible for presentation of financial reports to the Finance, Audit and Risk Committee of the Board
  • Responsible for processes related to revenues, donations, A/R, A/P, and expenses
  • Ensures that the legislative requirements are met, and that related policies support requirements
  • Optimizes financial processes and internal controls
  • Develops policies and maintains oversight for legal, banking, insurance, leasing, and contract matters anc manages relationships with legal and financial partners to ensure compliance and to minimize risk

 

Human Resources

  • Supports the Manager, HR, in implementing policies, procedures and best practices, and meeting all legislative requirements
  • Optimizes the employee development strategy to address the training, skill development and succession planning needs of employees and SCHC
  • Ensures that employee and labour relations are managed in a collaborative, progressive and proactive manner, and that the appropriate mechanisms are in place for open communication and engagement
  • Acts as a key member of the management team in union negotiations
  • Ensures that working conditions, salaries, benefits, and other employment related matters are fair and equitable, applied consistently and communicated effectively to all staff

 

Property, Facilities Management & Administration:

  • Senior leader representation and Co-Chair of the Multi Joint Health and Safety Committee, focused on optimizing policies and maintaining safe and healthy work environments
  • Oversees lease agreements, property and facilities management policies and administration, including contract management, maintenance, and safety, as well as strategic matters related to property and physical plant management, collaborating with internal staff, external contractors and government and community organizations
  • Oversees the effective operation of the general office, ensuring that it is appropriately staffed, and that administration in the office meets the needs of SCHC

 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Accounting designation required (CPA, CA preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years progressive management experience, including strategic leadership of finance and administration
  • Experience with property and facilities management and human resources
  • Experience in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of a range of financial software applications
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and with community partners
  • Advanced issue management, policy development, strategic planning, and critical thinking
  • Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, organization, and time management skills
  • Ability to be creative, initiate and adapt to change and growth, and future focused
  • Ability to sustain high performance teamwork and organization wide co-operation
