The Relief Supply Language Instructor for Newcomers position provides language instruction for women and gender diverse people who are new to Canada and assists them in integrating in the society. The responsibilities are to be carried out in accordance with the mission and policies of the YWCA Toronto and in the absence of the regular instructor.

 

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO – ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The English Language Skills and Development Program is a federally funded English language program for newcomer women and gender diverse people. It offers day language instruction classes from levels 0 through 6.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivers English language instruction to adult learners in accordance with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) principles and the Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) guidelines;
  • Designs level-appropriate lesson plans following the CLB and the LINC curriculum guidelines;
  • Integrates a variety of learning tasks into lesson plans to meet different learning styles;
  • Designs assessments for on-going evaluation of learners’ progress based on the CLB and PBLA guidelines;
  • Uses language learning software and other appropriate applications in classroom teaching;
  • May teach online as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • In-depth knowledge of an academic discipline normally acquired through courses leading to an undergraduate degree (e.g. social sciences, adult education, and psychology). Work involves application of theoretical knowledge to job-related problems (Cases for Equivalency will be considered);
  • Current TESL Ontario Certificate (Mandatory);
  • 3-5 years’ recent experience in Teaching English as a Second Language to adult learners;
  • Knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks and LINC Curriculum guidelines;
  • Training in and experience with Portfolio Based Language Assessment;
  • Awareness of diversity and sensitivity, anti-racism and anti-oppression theory;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience teaching multi-level learners preferred;
  • Proficient in the use of digital technologies for teaching and communication;
  • Ability to problem-solve and take action independently except where supervisor’s authority is required;
  • Ability to think strategically, problem solve creatively and to prioritize on an on-going basis;
  • Knowledge of settlement issues an asset.
