Job Description / Responsibilities

The Youth Trail Corps will begin a movement to train youth to work in the trails sector in Nova Scotia, giving them marketable skills. At the same time, it will support community trail managers as they build and maintain safe trails for everyone. It will increase capacity among community trail groups, First Nations, municipalities and others, fostering a culture of trail building among youth both in the professional and volunteer realms. This pilot will set the stage for an ongoing Youth Trail Corps. Community trail groups in particular will benefit from youth helping them face repair and maintenance issues from increased pandemic use and from recent hurricane damage. In phase one, the Youth Trail Corps Coordinator will set the foundation for the Corps, putting coordination, administration and funding in place for the pilot year (phase two) when trail crews will be deployed.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Trail Corps Coordinator will carry out the following tasks:

Consult with trail managing interest groups and youth from our target audience
Design a Trail Corps training framework, hiring process and human resources manual
Create a funding sustainability plan
Create a communications plan and an evaluation plan
Create a work plan for phase two (phase two pilot of trail crews)
Perform other related duties as assigned
Support the overall work of Hike NS

Skill / Qualification Requirements

Demonstrated experience and knowledge of project management (planning, implementation and evaluation)
Experience in communications planning and developing communications tools
Training and/or experience in youth leadership and community development
Have a passion for the outdoors
Able to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
Knowledge of the nonprofit sector and experience in working within it an asset

The successful candidate:

Must be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of the internship;
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have been granted refugee status;
Must not be in receipt of Employment Insurance during their internship;
Cannot be currently enrolled in school; and
Must be a graduate of degree or diploma programs from universities, colleges, post-secondary schools of technology, post-secondary institutes and CEGEP (collège d’enseignement général et professionnel, Québec)
Must live in Nova Scotia.

Working Conditions

The Coordinator will be required to work remotely from their own home office (require their own basic remote office equipment and technology). Must attend regular in-person meetings with co-workers as well as meet with partners. Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must have a valid drivers license.
