The Summer Program Teaching Assistant will provide assistance in the ELSD for lower-level students.

 

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO – ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The English Language Skills and Development Program is a federally funded English language program for newcomer women and gender diverse people. It offers day language instruction classes from levels 0 through 6 in a hybrid classroom environment

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to adult English students;
  • Prepare materials and resources under the direction of teachers;
  • Communicate with teachers to develop learning plans for students;
  • Maintain detailed records of student progress and areas of needed students;
  • Provide in-class assistance when needed, particularly in beginner level classes;
  • Facilitate conversation circles for small groups of students;
  • Work with children in the summer school program as required;
  • Provide front desk support and assist in organizing special events;
  • Provide other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Pursuing diploma/degree in English or English language teaching (Cases for Equivalency will be considered);
  • Excellent English communication and writing skills;
  • Ability to create responsive learning plans;
  • Understanding of various learning styles;
  • Comfort in using computer skills;
  • Sensitive to cultural, linguistic and religious diversity;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work in a team setting;
  • Good attention to details;
  • Punctual and reliable;
  • Ability to speak a second language is an asset;
  • First Aid & CPR certification.

 

Note: This a Full-Time, 30hours per week contract position for 8 weeks. There will be a break for 2 weeks in between the program and the incumbent will be working at least 3 days a week at Dixon.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicant must:

(1) Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

(2) have registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;

(3) Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person whom refugee protection has been conferred upon under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;

(4) Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant Provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

 

**International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
