We are seeking a Harm Reduction Outreach Worker in Calgary, who will be responsible for meeting the needs of people who use substance and those at risk or affected by HIV or HCV and other sexually transmitted and blood borne infections. Working within a harm reduction and rights-based philosophy, this position assists clients to achieve stabilized and sustained health, improve their quality of life and meet their individualized goals. The Harm Reduction Outreach Worker will provide enhanced support to Calgary’s existing outreach teams as well as drop-in space support.  This position requires a passionate individual who is committed to developing supportive and respectful relationships through non-judgmental and client-centered service delivery.  

This is a full-time twelve-week term position located in the Calgary office, working Monday to Friday. This position is funded through the Government of Canada’s Summer Jobs 2023 Program. The successful candidate must meet the program’s eligibility criteria. A flexible schedule and the ability to work evenings and weekends is required.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide community, mobile, and street-based outreach to diverse populations as per established program requirements and in collaboration with existing outreach case manager(s)
  • Provide harm reduction supplies and supports through outreach and out of the SafeLink Alberta Drop-In space
  • Prepare and/or distribute population specific harm reductions tools and safety information
  • Connect individuals with supports and resources in the community and advocate on behalf of clients to address barriers to service
  • Provide community-based outreach and education services, as needed
  • Complete all necessary documentation and data tracking

Qualifications/ Key Competencies              

  • Experience in customer service or human services
  • Outreach experience is desirable
  • Comfortable providing outreach and building rapport with individuals in a diverse setting
  • Knowledge of harm reduction practices and the needs of people who use substance and those at risk or affected by HIV or HCV
  • Comfortable working with sexual health related topic, diverse sexual orientations, and gender identities
  • Suicide Intervention (ASIST) and First Aid/CPR training is an asset
  • High ethical standards and professionalism with a demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Provision of a criminal security check with vulnerable sector search
  • Adheres to organizational policy and procedures

To meet the funder requirements for this position, all applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • be legally entitled to work and study in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Compensation

The starting salary range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00 per hour.
