JOB SUMMARY

The Burnside Gorge Community Centre is seeking a highly energetic, enthusiastic, and supportive Camp Leader to co-lead the Camp Survivor summer series, an outdoor adventure camp for youth ages 10-14 years. The Camp Leader will work collaboratively with the Youth Recreation Programmer to ensure the safety of the participants and to create a positive, inclusive and engaging camp experience.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate, lead, engage, deliver and review the activities planned for the youth camp
  • Provide direct support to youth during camp program hours
  • Ensure the safety of the participants using sound risk management
  • Identify and respond to camper behavior issues
  • Ensure respect for the participants, co-worker(s), the Youth Centre and the Community Centre
  • Provide support and/or refer support services for youth
  • Speak with parents/guardians to provide feedback and answer questions.
  • Maintain accurate program records, including incident reports, documentation and daily attendance.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Outdoor Recreation, Child and Youth Care and/or related disciplines
  • Experience working with youth an asset
  • A clear Criminal Record Check
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Class 4 (unrestricted) Driver’s License or willingness to obtain (preferred)

Must be eligible for the Canadian Summer Jobs program:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Actfor the duration of the employment
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulation

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Previous day camp experience an asset
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work
  • Experience working with children/youth of diverse backgrounds and abilities
  • Skilled at Conflict Resolution
  • Ability to work as a supportive team member
  • Ability to perform physical activities
  • Knowledge of child development

 

 

SALARY AND HOURS:

$20.05, 37.5 Hrs/week, Monday – Friday

CONTRACT TERM

Additional part-time hours prior to the start of camp for training and orientation

 37.5 Hrs/week, Monday – Friday - July 3 – August 25

 

REPORTS TO:

Community Recreation Coordinator
