About SWAA 

 

The recently formed Social Workers Association of Alberta (SWAA) has the following mandate: to promote and advocate on behalf of the social work profession in Alberta; to connect members; to provide services, supports, and resources to help members achieve professional excellence; and to promote and support the advancement of social justice. 

 

The Role 

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED) the position is mainly responsible for coordination activities for the Executive Director, the Board, the Association (SWAA) and its members. This position is accountable for (a) coordination of the Association’s website, membership platform functions and related activities (b) coordination of external and internal meetings (c) organizing and delivering initial planning activities for community events and meetings (d) coordinating internal and external communications. This position will also be responsible for responding to member and public requests. 

 

With a social justice lens, the successful candidate will understand the diverse function of the Association. The position includes being an enthusiastic contributor willing to engage with public policies, policy briefs and media releases, and will support the ED in developing these in service to the Association. The position is a part-time (20-25hours/week) position with salary ranging from $26,000 to $45,500/year. Compensation will be based on skills and experience. This is a remote position, and the successful candidate can be located anywhere in Alberta. 

 

Responsibilities 

 

Executive Assistance 

  • Provide assistance to the ED including calendar, email and phone management. 
  • Assist with creating presentations, speech writing, and preparing briefings. 
  • Research and coordinate SWAA participation in conferences and events all over Alberta 
  • Potentially co-supervise social work practicum students 

 

Engagement and Membership Support 

  • Communicate with organization stakeholders 
  • Assist with internal and external communications (including social media) 
  • Coordinate venders including web developers, membership software, IT, phone, etc. 
  • Support interest groups across the province (i.e., Social justice for social workers, Reconciliation and Decolonization, and other associated groups) 
  • Respond to technical questions from members and potential members 
  • Event planning and coordination around AGM, annual conference, etc. 

 

Support Policy Analysis (in collaboration with the ED) 

  • Research and analyze public policies from all levels of government and crown corporations with an anti-oppressive lens 
  • Support policy development for improving outcomes (especially pertaining to equity seeking groups) 
  • Collaborate on policy briefs and media releases 
  • Create and maintain a database of media contacts 
  • Work with the ED, SWAA membership, and the Board to collaborate on policy for the sustainable operation of SWAA 

 

Qualifications 

  • RSW with at least a BSW 
  • Demonstrated organizational success 
  • Demonstrated writing skills (English) 

 

Desired skills and experience 

  • Strong membership support skills (customer service) skills and excellent attention to detail 
  • Strong communication skills and a high degree of attention to detail 
  • Strong organization and time management skills 
  • Able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality 
  • Understanding of privilege, oppression, and social justice 
  • Excellent communicator (written and spoken) 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) 
  • At least one year working as a Registered Social Worker 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 

 

Working Environment 

  • Mostly remote work 
  • Some intra-provincial travel may be required 
  • SWAA is a new organization and does not yet offer health and dental benefits 
  • Varied working hours including evening and weekends
