Job Title: Family Development Counsellor

Temporary, Full-Time, May 31, 2024

Closing Date: May 31, 2023

Starting date: ASAP

Job Summary: Provides supportive services to parents, children, and/or youth. Services provided include crisis intervention, behaviour management, harm reduction, and risk assessment. Parent assessment, risk reduction, and support to families and children experiencing issues associated with child protection.

Wage/Salary: 33.83 - 41.32 per hour, as per Collective Agreement.

Location: Greater Victoria - community based

Hours of Work: Flexible hours Tuesday-Saturday 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists case management team in identifying potential family issues.
  • Participates in risk assessment and harm reduction planning and implementation.
  • Monitors client's wellbeing and progress.
  • Provides emotional support and feedback to children and families.
  • Demonstrates and practices effective crisis management skills.
  • May be required to give comprehensive and accurate testimony in court concerning issues of child protection.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with individuals experiencing emotional distress and family trauma.
  • Proficient in understanding and applying CARF Accreditation related practices.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • An undergraduate degree in human services (CYC/SW) or the equivalent combination of field specific education and work experience.
  • At least two years previous work in a similar environment where issues of child safety and protection are a focus.
  • Theoretical foundation in an established research-based Parenting Approach.
  • Knowledge of the mandate of the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
  • Familiarity with MCFD Family Vulnerability Assessment Model.
  • Thorough knowledge of community supports and services typically accessed by clients referred to the program.
  • Knowledge of substance misuse issues and complex mental health challenges and the effect on families.
  • Familarity with Microsoft 365 and Electornic Client Records.

Additional Information:

  • Employees will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and driver's abstract.
  • Employees in this position are required to work in a stressful environment often dealing with clientele in family crisis. The ability to function independently, frequently under pressure while managing a caseload, is essential.
  • A valid class 5 driver's license, the use of a vehicle in good working order, with business insurance, and the ability to transport clients and/or children (tether bolt), are required.
  • Occupational First Aid Levle 1 (OFA) certification required.
  • Minimum of 2 COVID vaccinations required.
